Introduction

Manchester East fringes with Manchester Piccadilly, fringing at Ardwick Junction, Manchester North, fringing at both Philips Park South Junction and Philips Park West Junction and Stockport, fringing at Heaton Norris Junction, controlling the lines through to Huddersfield, fringing at Diggle Junction and Peak District at New Mills central.

Manchester East SCC (Formerly Ashburys, Guide Bridge, Romiley Junction and Stalybridge), Dinting, Denton Junction, Ashton Moss North and Baguley Fold have all been simulated.

Start-Up Options

Scenarios

Stalybridge Platform Closure

Stalybridge Platform Closure, A random platform closure at Stalybridge

Eras

2012 - Present

This era represents the area after Stalybridge moved to Manchester East SCC, but prior to the closure of Ashton Moss North Signal Box in May 2018

Other Options

Scale of Problems:

Choose the scale of train delays and infrastructure failures. The normal SimSig options of “None”, “Low”, “Medium” and “High” are available. Select which one you wish to play from the drop-down menu.

Absolute Block:

Select whether or not Absolute Block is turned on.

Features

Absolute Block & Semaphore signalling

Details on how to operate the Absolute Block system can be found in the separate Absolute Block manual .

Semaphore signalling is in use at Ashton Moss Jn and Denton Jn.

Electrification

The Up and Down Main from Ardwick Jn to Hadfield/Glossop is electrified with 25kV AC overhead. No other lines in the simulation are electrified. Note especially that the Up and Down Loop between Guide Bridge and Hyde Jn is not electrified.

Box Notes

Ashton Moss North Junction

Clearing Points

Stalybridge - Signal AMN50

Denton Junction - Signal AMN14. For passenger trains, points should be set for the route up to Signal AMN50

Baguley Fold Junction - The last track circuit of the route.

Baguley Fold Junction

Clearing Points

Ashton Moss North Jn - Track circuit in advance of shunt signal, BF31. Please note, this prevents you sending Train out of Section until this track is clear.

Denton Junction

You will need to keep an eye on trains approaching from Heaton Norris as there is not a lot of time between the slot being requested. While it would be possible to give extra approach warning, it couldn’t be guaranteed that the train would then enter. It is therefore suggested that you either watch the simplifier, or leave the slot granted until you wish to send a train to Heaton Norris.

Clearing Points

Standard overlap markers apply.

Dinting

Clearing Points

Standard overlap markers apply.

Ashburys

Ashburys Control Area is based on that of the former Ashburys Panel. Now worked by the signaller at Manchester East SCC.

Ashburys is your fringe to Manchester Piccadilly, and one of your fringes to Manchester North. You control the two junctions, either side of the station, as well as the numerous yard entrances on the panel.

The slot at Ashburys is needed for trains entering on the Up Arrival only. No call is needed for trains entering via the Down Arrival.

Guide Bridge

Guide Bridge Control Area is based on that of the former Guide Bridge Panel. Now worked by the signaller at Manchester East SCC.

Guide Bridge controls two junctions, both with a significant number of conflicting moves. This gives a fairly hectic, yet consistent pattern to the schedule.

Trains which access Avenue Down sidings, Brookside Sidings, or Guide Bridge yard require a courtesy phone call to advise of an inbound train.

Please note, there are no auto buttons on either signal GBB847 or GB848.

Signal GB867 will not clear until the train arrived complete plunger has been depressed. There are two plungers located at Newton for Hyde Station, and at signal GB867. For the plunger to be operated, a train must call at either Newton for Hyde station, or wait approximately 60 seconds at signal GB867. The operation of the plunger is indicated by a light above Newton for Hyde down platform.

Stalybridge

Stalybridge Control Area is based on that of the former Stalybridge signal box area. Now worked by the signaller at Manchester East SCC.

Please note, the layout here changed significantly in 2012, and therefore older timetables may not work.

Due to flank protection, it is not possible to route from signals SE7036, SE7038, SE7042 to signal SE7022 with a route set Signal SE7023 to the Platform 5 Buffers.

Romiley Junction

Romiley’s Control Area is based on that of the former Romiley Junction OCS panel. Now worked by the signaller at Manchester East SCC.

Romiley controls again, a small number of junctions with regular conflicting moves. This makes the workstation feel significantly busier than it may be at times.

Timetable Notes

Any required information on supplied timetables is supplied in the Timetable Description tab.

Multiplayer & Chaining

Manchester East is ideally suited to the intermediate or experienced player in single player.

In multiplayer, Manchester East SCC has been split into its four former signal boxes to give a more balanced multiplayer environment. Manchester East is ideal for two or three people to play. Though a maximum of eight can play.

The simulation chains at the following locations:

Simulation Location
Huddersfield Fringe at Diggle Junction
Manchester North Fringes at Philips Park South and Philips Park West *1
Manchester Piccadilly Fringe at Ardwick
Peak District Fringe at New Mills Central
Stockport Fringe at Heaton Norris Junction

*1 When not chained to Manchester North, Trains will which are booked Baguley Fold Junction, Philips Park South and Ashburys do not leave the sim, and are treated as a single train throughout.
