Introduction

The simulation covers 6 boxes (Ferrybridge, Castleford, Cutsyke, Prince of Wales, Horbury Jn and Wakefield Kirkgate) and a shunters panel (Milford West Sidings) and is based on data from 2014. This allows the simulation to chain with Leeds Ardsley, Sheffield & Leeds East/West as well as York with possibilities to chain to Doncaster if ever built.

Start-Up Options

Scenarios

Easy

Normal running; no delays or incidents.

Average Day

A typical day, with some late running and a small chance of equipment failures.

Leaffall

Autumn is in full swing; low adhesion means trains are accelerating slower and braking earlier. There is a higher chance of late running and equipment failures.

Cutsyke Blocked

The Up and Down Cutsyke lines, between Castleford and Pontefract Monkhill (exclusive) are closed for engineering works. All trains must divert via Normanton.

Other Options

CCTV and MCB Crossings Disabled: Tick to disable CCTV and MCB level crossings. Heck Lane crossing will still be enabled as this crossing is normally closed across the road. Old Station crossing will also still be enabled as this is operated by a crossing keeper.

Features

ACI

As an aid to solo players, Automatic Code Insertation (ACI) is provided at Wakefield Kirkgate, Castleford and Knottingley.

Signal Group Replacement Controls

Several boxes are provided with Signal Group Replacement Controls for individual interlockings; right clicking on these controls will replace all signals in that interlocking area to danger. Note that when the control is applied the ERS buttons for automatic signals will be set. However when the control is cancelled these ERS buttons remain set so will need to be cancelled manually.

Box Notes

Horbury Jn

Horbury Junction is a lever frame box on the converging routes from Barnsley & Mirfield. The box controls the junction and the entrance to a small Bombardier depot. Where only 1 route exists from a signal then you only need to click on the signal to set the route.

The line to and from Barnsley is worked by Absolute Block in reality, though this is not simulated. You can not release Flockton GF for a train to enter or clear a route from HJ53 towards the ground frame if there is another train en route from Barnsley.

Trains for Horbury Storrs Hill should be sent towards Healy Mills as it is under their control. It is not the same location as Bombardier.

By convention, trains to and from Healey Mills use the Down Slow and Up Fast between Wakefield and Horbury Jn, to avoid using the lower-speed turnouts at Horbury Jn. As the turnouts on the Barnsley line are low-speed as well, these trains generally use the Down Fast and Up Slow as they have to reduce speed anyway. This local arrangement may not be reflected in the timetable; as ever, signallers should use their best judgement to work the layout most effectively.

Wakefield Kirkgate

Wakefield Kirkgate fringes with Horbury Jn and takes the mainline through towards Normanton as well as taking the Goole line past Crofton West Jn towards Pontefract Monkhill. It also controls the Turners lane Curve as well as the Oakenshaw Junctions for the Single line to Monk Bretton.

The workstation fringes externally with Leeds Ardsley over the single line to Kirkgate and at Hare Park Jn.

Trains routed towards Wakefield Westgate require a slot, this is achieved by clicking “L247 Slot” roundel.

Double Red Protection

The following signals have double red protection enabled:- WK6770, WK1256 (To WK1236),

Monk Bretton Branch

This single line branch is operated by one train working with no staff between WK6826/6840 signals and WK6819 stop board including the run round loop. Once past the run round loop the rest of the branch is classed as a siding. The two roundels indicate that the there is no train in section when white, and while red indicates that there is a train in the section. Trains coming from Monk Bretton will stop at WK6819 stop board and request permission to enter the single line.

Points 9015 at Oakenshaw South Jn are fitted with a Point Reversal alarm (Block Bell 1 in the message options). After the passage of a train these points should be keyed reverse.

Crofton Old Station Gates

There is a small crossing located between the junction at Crofton West which is manned. In order to signal routes across the crossing you need to operate the Close Gates button, which will start flashing. This will prompt the crossing keeper to go and close the gates, lock them and place the keys into the crossing machine in his hut. At this point the Close gates indication will go steady and allow you to signal routes. Once all trains have passed clear of the crossing you must release the keys to allow the crossing keeper to go and open the gates again by clicking the Close gates button (the roundel will remain steady). Please note that it can take the crossing keeper 5 - 6 minutes to complete the process before the gates are closed and locked as he is also responsible for Crofton No 2 crossing which is in the Bombardier Depot (Not simulated).

Crofton Depot

You must advise the Bombardier Designated person (DP) at the earliest opportunity of any trains due to enter the depot.

Cobra Sidings

You must advise the person In Charge of the sidings of any trains due to enter the sidings.

WK1193 will not clear until an onward route is set from WK1195.

Oakenshaw South Crossover (9015 Points)

Points 9015 must be maintained in the reverse position except when it is necessary for them to be set in the normal position for a train movement. An audible alarm is supplied which will activate if the points are not returned to the reverse position after a movement has been made over them.

Castleford

Castleford power box controls the lines from Normanton towards Milford Jn including the triangle with the Up & Down Leeds lines towards Stourton and Wakefield Europort. The box fringes externally with LeedsEW and internally with Kirkgate, Cutsyke and Milford.

Wakefield Europort

Trains to Wakefield Europort require a slot to access the yard.

Double Red Protection

The following signals have double red protection enabled:- CD665, CD666.

Unusual signal protection

In order to get a proceed aspect on CD1268 then either CD2444 points need to be normal or 108 track circuit occupied or WK1266 signal needs to be at proceed.

Prince of Wales and Cutsyke

Prince of Wales and Cutsyke signal boxes cover the line between Castleford (exc) and Pontefract Monkhill.

Prince of Wales controls access to the colliery, down goods, up and down sidings, the connection with the main line as well as Skinners Lane crossing. Note that there is no route between P1039 and the Down Siding.

Cutsyke covers the rest of the line including Cutsyke crossing.

The overlap from P360 towards Skinners Lane will the points in the overlap at normal. In order to route a train into the colliery (the timetable location is "Prince of Wales RJB Mining" shown as "COLLIERY" on the sim), P360 may need to be manually cancelled to drop the overlap.

Milford Junction

Milford panel controls the Up & Down Normanton lines from Church Fenton, through Sherburn-in-Elmet where there is a junction to Gascoigne Wood, thence on past Milford Jn towards Castleford as wells as the lines from Gascoigne Wood through to Ferrybridge. This box fringes with York and LeedsEW externally and with Ferrybridge and Castleford internally as well as the Milford West Sidings shunt panel.

Working of Milford West Sidings

Trains entering Milford West Sidings require a slot. The slot is requested by the Milford signaller clicking the roundel at the appropriate end of the yard. The slot is granted by the Milford West signaller setting a route from M684X (from the Milford Jn end) or M703X (from the Gascoigne Wood end). Once the slot has been granted the route can be set into the yard.

The sidings in reality are not track circuited, however, to allow the user to see where trains are, the tracks illuminate like track circuits, however, do not necessarily behave like track circuits when routes are set into them

Up Passenger Loop

Down move directions into the Up Passenger Loop from M5233 and M5235 can only be set for calling-on moves when the loop is occupied.

Working of Milford Down Sidings

Milford Down sidings consist of a Down Reception siding accessible from both ends and with a run round loop and 4 sidings. One of these sidings is in the sim, the others are external. The sidings are all controlled by a shunter using hand points and hand signals. These have been simulated using the ground frame feature. There is no release for this as it is not a ground frame in reality.

On the Reception Line at the junction end is a shunt signal (5241) that is not controlled by the signaller. It is effectively a points indicator and shows proceed automatically when the hand points ahead of it are normal allowing a train to proceed into the reception line.

There is not enough room between the exit points from the run round loop and sidings and signal M691 to reverse a train. Reversals must run via M5248 on the main line.

Milford West Sidings shunt panel

This is a small panel that operates the points and sidings in the 12 sidings at Milford West. Trains entering the sidings from Milford Panel will request a release, this is given by setting the route from M684X (from the Milford Jn end) or M703X (from the Gascoigne Wood end).

All sidings are permissive. However siding 12 is only permissive from the Gascoigne Wood end for attaching and detaching locomotives. Signal M5250 will only clear if the siding is occupied - the siding cannot be used as a through siding in the Up direction.

Ferrybridge

Ferrybridge is by far the largest and busiest panel. It is responsible for all the lines approaching Knottingley, including those from Leeds Ardsley at Moorthorpe and Doncaster at Shaftholme Jn, as well as controlling Sudforth lane Sidings, Knottingley Sidings and the routes to Eggborough & Drax Power Stations and the start of the single line to Goole. It is also has a large amount of level crossings both CCTV and AHB types.

The blue triangle at Ferrybridge North Jn is a via button. There are two routes from FE6622 to FE6377 - one via the Down Pontefract and one via the Up Pontefract. The route via the Up Pontefract requires the use of the via button.

Trains travelling into the power station require the route setting from FE6621 into the Power Station BEFORE a route is set up to FE6621, otherwise trains will be brought to a stand on the signal until the overlap drops out.

Knottingley station reversals

Trains booked to reverse at Knottingley East Jn should be sent onto the Goods Line behind FE6402; trains booked to reverse at England lane reverse on the main line behind FE5424

Knottingley TMD & WRD

You must call the Person In Charge for permission before you signal a train into the TMD or WRD at either end.

Ferrybridge Power Station

You must advise the Power Station Controller of the approach of any trains.

Any trains requiring to enter the power station in the wrong direction will require a slot granted.

In order to release the ground frame to shunt cripple wagons into the siding, 2035 points must be in the reverse position.

Trains leaving the power station towards Ponterfract East Jn have a choice of two routes between FE6622 and FE6377. The main route is via the Down line, however, a route is also available via the Up line by routing via the Blue Triangle.

Ferrybridge Holding sidings

The Train preparer must be advised of any train bound for the sidings for which he will grant permission.

Eggborough Power Station

You must advise the Power Station Controller of the approach of any trains.

Sudforth Lane

Trains booked to run-round or teminate must be sent into the sidings. If they are sent main line the run-round will happen there which may cause problems! Trains just requiring a crew-change can be sent on any line. There is no wrong-route code provided at this location.

Heck Lane CCTV Crossing

Due to the level of road and rail traffic, Heck Lane barriers will normally be in the lowered position. Road users press a plunger at the crossing when they require the barriers to be raised which indicates on the panel to alert you of the need to raise the barriers. When safe to do so, replace the protecting signals and raise the barriers. The barriers will then need lowering manually. If the barriers remain raised for more than two minutes then you will receive a warning that they need lowering.

Kellingley Colliery

The colliery comprises of two sections. The Bunker line only takes 1 train and is the only line in use after 2014. Prior to 2014 the Colliery line was also in use which lead to a further loading point and numerous sidings. As a result the Bunker line is NOT an entry/exit point, whereas the Colliery IS an entry/exit.

Level Crossings

Hensall, Sudforth Lane and Whitley are fitted with Auto Lower facilities

FE6426 Overide

An override facility is provided to allow FE6426 to be cleared when the Signaller knows the approaching train will fit between FE6422 signal and Knottingley CCTV Crossing or during any degraded working when FE6422 needs to be passed at Danger.

Double Red Protection

The following signals have double red protection enabled:- FE6378, FE6419, FE6426

Timetable Notes

Wakefield Europort

There is one entry point in the timetable list for the Europort, but two entry points. When a train is timetabled to enter at the Europort the sim will automatically decide which line it enters on.
