Trains Stopping On Approach To Your Area

Trains Stopping On Approach To Your Area

A simulation may feature a goods loop, for example, just outside your control area. Typically outbound trains will be designed to "fall off" before they reach the loop, or the loop is not simulated so they pass straight through.

However, for timetabling purposes, inbound trains may be scheduled to recess in a loop, or stop at a station platform to allow other trains to pass. It has proven very difficult in simulation terms to release the looped train at the appropriate time, particularly when there is insufficient warning of approaching trains (which may or may not be running, depending on the rules of the timetable), and especially when delays are on. It is a no-win situation for the simulation user.

It is therefore recommended for timetable authors to do one of three things:

  • Time the stopping train later up to the dwell location, such that the train runs non-stop from its entry point to the user's area of control, entering that area of control at the correct time
  • Remove the loop location from the schedule completely (if that is an option)
  • Make the dwell a passing time.

The choice taken should be determined on a case-by-case basis.
