Crossing Keeper

Crossing Keeper

A crossing keeper is the name of a Signaller who works at a signal box that controls a level crossing only (sometimes known as a gate box). The Crossing Keeper's job is to lower the barriers for the crossing (which is adjacent to the box) when a train approaches, and raise them again afterwards. They are used when it is preferred to have local control over a crossing rather than remotely via CCTV (although some Crossing Keepers control other crossings via CCTV, although these crossings are rarely more than a few miles away), and on busy panels to aid the signaller in the main box. They do not control any signals, apart from the two signals on either side of the crossing, which they allow to clear when the crossing is down, and can replace to red in an emergency. These signals are also controlled by the main signal box, which also sets the routes from the signals.
