Airport Tripwire

There is a tripwire paralell to the railway between EY643 and EY648, as indicated on the panel, where the railway is beneath the approach to Edinburgh Airport's runway.

In the event that the tripwire breaks, (see start-up options ), the alarm should be acknowledged by clicking it, and signals EY643 and EY648 immediately replaced to danger.

You will receive telephone updates from the site as the incident progresses; traffic may resume when the alarm is deactivated and the person in charge confirms the incident has been resolved.

It is up to the player how they wish to handle the inevitable disruption to services. Editing the timetable via both the timetable editor and the train list will be required. You may divert trains via Winchburgh Junction; note that this will introduce significant disruption to the E&G line. You may also wish to consider turning round Fife Circle services at Dalmeny. Note also that the running time to Perth via Polmont and Stirling is roughly the same as running via Ladybank, and that Dundee can also be accessed this way (see the Central and North East Scotland simulations for further details). Take care to note the activities of trains towards Edinburgh, as they may form or join services working other routes.

Dalmeny

Signals EY655 and EY657 are approach lit.

There is no main aspect route between EY655 and EY663; routes must be set between the two signals using EY957.

The Down Yard GF requires the points to the DPL to be Reverse in order to release the frame.

The Up Yard GF requires the adjacent points between the UPL and Up Fife to be Normal in order to release the frame.

Dalmeny UPL and DPL are relatively short (see Loop Lengths ) and will not accommodate most freight trains.

Forth Bridge

The Forth Bridge is bi-directionally signalled. To enable bi-directional working, left click the 'BiDi Release' control when the bridge is clear of traffic. The wrong-direction routes can then be set over the bridge. When the wrong-direction movement has completed, right click the release to return to normal working. Note that right-direction routes cannot be set while the Release has been enabled, and that the bridge should not be used for trains to overtake each other: use the passing loops at various locations either side of the bridge to do this.

Routes cannot be set to EY663 without the BiDi Release being enabled.

Due to weight restrictions, freight trains are not permitted to pass each other on the bridge. A freight train may pass any other type of train.

Rosyth Dockyard

You must give a slot to the Rosyth Dockyard signaller to allow a train to approach from there; to grant it, set a route from RD9. As this is a slot, the signal will turn white rather than green.

The signaller at the Dockyard will phone four minutes after a train enters the area if the slot is not granted while the line is clear. Trackwork at the Dockyard allows a train waiting at RD9 to be passed by a train heading into the Docks.

Inverkeithing

EV426 is approach lit.

Trains booked to reverse within the south headshunt may instead reverse in the station or vice-versa, provided they can access the required onward route.

Longannet Branch

WARNING: It is possible to gridlock this location!

Longannet box lies on the reopened (2008) line between Stirling and Dunfermline. At Longannet there is a power station accessible from both Stirling and Dunfermline.

However, there is no passing loop as such for through trains. Longannet Signal box in not incorporated into this sim (or Central Scotland) but it is simulated by auto-working and how it works is explained below to assist you in operating Edinburgh. A further complication is the chaining to Central Scotland sim.

The entry points are at Alloa (loop) and Longannet Power station with the full line to Alloa being coded within the sim.

Down Trains

A train from Longannet PS will present itself at Longannet Signal box and the TD will appear at Signal EO703. If the line is clear you may signal the train to Charlestown as normal using the slotted signal EO703. If a train is travelling in the UP direction it will pass the train waiting at EO703 with no difficulty.

Around 5 minutes before a train is due to enter the simulation at Alloa you will receive a phone call advising you. You have no power to prevent that train entering so you must take whatever action you think appropriate to prevent gridlock beyond Longannet box. You may continue to send and receive trains from the power station while a train is travelling from Alloa. The train will proceed to Longannet where it will then present itself within the TD box at EO713 and the above procedure can be followed. A message will be received as the train approaches Longannet.

A bit of code ensures that Down trains can't occupy the Longannet 'home' TC at the same time which controls the auto working. However, a train can still enter at Longannet PS while a train is travelling from Alloa and vice versa.

In stand-alone the Longannet signaller will phone after 4 minutes if train is not released and line is detected as clear.

Up Trains

When you have a train for Longannet you should first phone the box using the telephone menu (there are a separate calls for the power station and Alloa route). In reality this is a courtesy call as Longannet has no power to refuse a train from Edinburgh but you will be penalised a nominal 5 points for failing to call. ARS will set UP routes from Charlestown and the auto working will take over at Longannet. When you place an ‘Alloa’ call a block will be put in place to prevent a Down train entering from Alloa for 90 minutes, ensuring that a stand-off between trains to and from Alloa cannot occur. The block will be raised by one of three events; the passing of the train, a phone call cancelling the train or by the expiry of the 90 minute timer. NOTE: if the latter event occurs you will be penalised 25 points! The timer is restarted every time you place a call, so a series of trains can be sent.

If you place the ‘wrong call’ and don’t rectify it e.g. place a power station call for an Alloa train then you will need to deal with any adverse consequences.

Other Notes

If a train is travelling Down from Alloa the ARS will not set a route from Charlestown for an Up Alloa train but Longannet trains will be signalled as normal. Once the Longannet Slot has been given from EO713 the ARS will then be disabled from Charlestown to Longannet too.

Manual route setting will still be possible subject to interlocking constraints only. Care must be taken not to cause gridlock! Note that the interlocking does not prevent routes being set simultaneously to EO705 and EO708.

Finally, if you try and send a train to Alloa while Central Scotland is connected without the Alloa line option being selected the outgoing train will be diverted to Longannet power station where it will leave the sim.
