Trains leaving Fratton Depot

Panel 1

Panel one is the busiest of the two panels, although the smallest in terms of mileage. Your area of control is from Portsmouth Harbour (inclusive) to Fratton (exclusive). Also included in the area of your control are the two terminal platforms at Portsmouth & Southsea and also the Portsmouth Down Carriage Sidings. Within the area of control are only 3 automatic signals on the up line and two on the down line, all other signals being controlled signals.

Swinging overlaps are provided for signals 84 and 86.

The Down Carriage Sidings at Portsmouth and Southsea are only accessible from the Back Road and care must be taken to ensure that any trains booked to berth in these sidings use this line only. Although the data for the Back Road location allows reversal on the Down Relief at the Fratton end, this is only for access to and from Fratton Yards and Depot.

Interlocking areas

The following interlocking areas affect the signalling equipment within your area of control:

Interlocking area Number of individual items of equipment affected
Harbour 105 Items of signalling equipment in the area.
Yard 183 Items of signalling equipment in the area.
Fratton 2 Items of signalling equipment in the area.

Trains leaving Fratton Depot

The signaller on Panel One should be aware that all traffic leaving the Carriage Servicing Depot at Fratton will need to pass through the carriage washing plant located on the road giving access to and from the depot. The speed of all trains through this section is a maximum of 3mph and this should be taken into account when signalling a train onto the Down Main or into the terminal platforms at Portsmouth & Southsea.
