SimSig Victoria South Eastern Panel 5

Introduction

Panel 5 controls the lower-numbered platforms at London Victoria and out to and including Grosvenor Bridge Junction. Unlike Victoria Central's four main tracks (and fifth reversible line), Eastern only has three main tracks plus two more that are a little slower via Stewarts Lane.

Locations

Victoria Station

Panel 5 controls platforms 1 to 8 at Victoria station. This houses the modern day VSOE trains and services to destinations generally in the South East of the UK (Kent mostly).

Unlike the Central side of the station, platform lengths differ considerably, and even without "double docking" in use, not every train will fit into every platform.

Plat. Length (m) # of 20 m carriages
1 270 13
2 359 17
3 188 9
4 203 10
5 247 12
6 245 12
7 286 14
8 218 10

Grosvenor Down Carriage Sidings

Just outside Victoria station is a small shed for stabling trains. Trains may have water topped up in the toilets but no maintenance is done here.

Signalling Arrangements

Platforms 2/3/4/5

Platform 2 has two starting signals. The far end signal (VS5) will only show a proceed aspect if one of the following is true:

  • Platform 2 is empty
  • A route is set from platform 2
  • A route is set from platform 3, 4 or 5 and a train is close to the signal
  • This is to prevent a train in platform 2 inadvertently reading the far-end signal instead of the near-end signal (VS3).

Grosvenor Down Carriage Sidings

Trains from the sidings to Victoria will be reported by a phone call from the shunter. The shunter will advise which section (A or B) and the train identity. You, as the signaller, must interpose the description in the appropriate TD berth and signal the train accordingly.

Trains inbound require the slot request to be operated. Do not set route from the station platforms to VS23/VS25 until the sidings are ready for the train. This avoids congestion while waiting for the slot.

Victoria Central

You see some indications of trains passing along Victoria Central (panel 1), as per real life. You can ignore these until trains need to pass between the two panels.

To Send a Train to Panel 1

For the appropriate platform, left-click on the "request to central" green circle. This transmits the train identity to panel 5 from the platform, warning of which train is approaching. However, you do not need to wait until Victoria do anything - you can set the route from the platform to the right-facing exit arrow. When panel 1 is ready they will set route from the exit arrow onto their running lines, thus completing the route and allowing the platform starter to show a proceed aspect.

Do not set route until the train is ready to depart (indicated by the TRTS flashing). Otherwise this locks points reverse which prevents panel 1 from having full flexibility around platforms 9-11.

To Accept a Train from Panel 1

When Victoria wish to send you a train, they will operate the "request from central" slot for the appropriate signal (VC112 or VC532). You can see from the limited indications from panel 1's side which train is coming across. Click on the left-facing arrow symbol on the boundary and then the exit arrow for the platform. You do not need to click on the "request from central" request.

Do not set a route from the boundary arrows until the train is closely approaching. Otherwise this locks points reverse which prevents panel 1 from having full flexibility around platforms 9-11.

Grosvenor Bridge Junction

This junction is where two lines diverge off towards Stewarts Lane. Trains not scheduled to go via Stewarts Lane can be routed this way; however, they may lose a minute or two on this slower route. Trains scheduled via Stewarts Lane can go via the overhead lines if necessary. Trains destined for any of the depot lines, the berthing sidings, or via Longhedge must use the route via Stewarts Lane.

Fringes

Panel 5 connects to panel 1, as described above, and to panel 7. No special operation is required to send trains to, or accept trains from, panel 7. However, cooperation is always recommended!
