We normally have 3 meets a year, in March at a different location each year, in July in London and in November in Derby. As has already been noted elsewhere, London in July 2012 is probably not the ideal place for a meeting. Should we look at spreading ourselves round the UK a bit next year and not having a London meet at all? Apart from Derby and London, I think there have been meets in Bristol, Peterborough, York and Wakefield (but that list may not be complete). That does leave a lot of the UK which has not seen SimSig in all its glory. We certainly seem to be missing visits to Scotland and Wales as well as some big chunks of England like the North West and South Coast. I would be quite happy to be as far from London as possible while the Olympics are taking place; I would also be happy to go somewhere new for another meet. Of course, this is all subject to suitable venue which requires some sort of local knowledge, but how about somewhere like Cardiff or Swansea in March, Glasgow or Edinburgh for July and then back to Derby for November? Then in 2013, maybe the floating meeting somewhere in the Manchester/Liverpool area, followed by London and Derby? “In life, there is always someone out there, who won’t like you, for whatever reason, don’t let the insecurities in their lives affect yours.” – Rashida Rowe Log in to reply |

Edinburgh in July is probably not a good idea either, as the festival will be on and so it is peak tourist season - so trains and hotels will be at their most expensive. I was in Edinburgh in March, however, and got very good deals on a fantastic hotel and trains from Lancaster, so it may be an option then when its out of season. There's the right way, the wrong way and the railway. Log in to reply |

It was suggested on Teamspeak earlier that we could think about Guildford as it is really well served out of London. Obviously not a good idea for July 2012 with the Sporting Festival in town. Eastleigh was also suggested. We also thought about the likes of Northampton, Birmingham and York. Log in to reply |

What about Reading? Don't know about pubs in the area (officer...?) but of-course it is accessible via many TOCs (FGW, XC, SWT) and XC avoids London entirely for those coming from up north.

The Three Guineas serves some Ale, however, there is no seperate function room where we could hide ourselves away, and of course, if its a Saturday, the BTP use said pub for away football fans prior to them heading to the Madejski Stadium. I am heading into town later to yell at my bank, so could do a quick recce. When in doubt - Contingency plan 2A. Someone didn't buy the milk - 2A. Someone sneezed at Swansea - 2A. A driver complains the cab is too cold - 2A. Unable to operate a HEx service 4 vice 8 - 2A. Points failure at Ipswich - 2A. Landslip at Pitlochry - 2A Log in to reply |

However, I have just spoken to my Dad, who is a man well versed in the public houses of Reading, and he knows of no large pubs that serve real ale. The only suggestion he came up with is "The Hop Leaf" for real ale, but its a small place and would be totally unsuitable When in doubt - Contingency plan 2A. Someone didn't buy the milk - 2A. " said:what about hull/york/doncaster?Bit close to previous venues at Peterborough/York/Wakefield. Should we not try and spread ourselves round so that people who have previously had a long or expensive journey to a meet get a chance for something a bit more local? That is why I suggested Scotland/Wales/North West in the original posting. “In life, there is always someone out there, who won’t like you, for whatever reason, don’t let the insecurities in their lives affect yours.” – Rashida Rowe Last edited: 30/07/2011 at 09:56 by postal Log in to reply |

" said:Manchester addedAlthough I can't stand ale and have no idea why anyone would want to drink it (*ducks* :P) I'm happy to help finding places in Manchester. My favourite pub in the city centre is in the Good Beer Guide and (according to the Internet) has "meeting facilities", although I haven't seen them. Log in to reply |

OK a complete list of suggestions and results as present NOTE RED IS NO GO PLACES BLUE IS POSSIBLE PLACES GREEN ARE GOOD SHOTS Eastleigh -Only few places found could possibly be worthwhile. A couple of good curry houses and overnight places of stay found though Tonbridge - Very poor area for research found for everything = NO GO Reading - The places found are at a distance from the station. Some good curry houses and places of overnight stay found Guildford - Two great places have been found. Good Curry houses found and plenty of places for overnight stay are available. However a debate undergoes about the ease of transport access Hull - Some really good pubs have been found within 10 minute walk of the station. A couple of curry houses have also been researched. Lots of overnight places are very much available in short distance from station however transport arrangements could be difficult Swindon - Bit like hull, selected few good pubs with great curry houses in local area and very much accommodating for overnight stay Cardiff - Many great pubs found especially with Cask Masque, also within close area to the station are hotels for overnight stay and also curry houses for evening food Swansea - Nothing within the criteria for pubs near station STILL TO RESEARCH ARE GLASGOW EDINBURGH BIRMINGHAM EXETER SOUTHAMPTON DONCASTER PRESTON STEVENAGE BRISTOL LEEDS NOTTINGHAM MANCHESTER LIVERPOOL NEWCASTLE LEICESTER YORK LINCOLN CHESTER NEWPORT BLACKPOOL OXFORD WESTBURY CAMBRIDGE WARRINGTON CREWE Last edited: 31/07/2011 at 11:34 by nezza Reason: changed Log in to reply |
