The Wiki is a community textbook that helps users old and new to use SimSig. While we at SimSig have done our best to describe things as helpfully as possible, sometimes we don't. This is where you come in. If you don't understand something, ask us. If you think you can write it better, do so. We keep an eye on things so don't worry if you don't get it quite right, or your grammar or spelling isn't great, we can come along and tidy things up if necessary.

The Wiki is only as good as you make it, so please contribute! Many thanks.

Also if you ask a question that's answered in the WIKI you may be asked (nicely) to look there rather than being told tha answer here. If you have difficulty finding your way through say so as that's the way to improve it as a resource.

As I'm pretty sure that everyone within the excellent SimSig community will be more forgiving than some people on Wikipedia if I ever made a mistake, you might just find me editing certain articles on the SimSig Wiki as and when I spot a spelling or grammar mistake or a slightly incorrectly worded article. Just glad I can contribute to SimSig in some way

Glad to hear it!

Is any help needed creating new articles (or recreating them from the old Wiki?). I'm pretty sure that I could help out by creating any new articles needed and at least starting them up with the basics or even if someone creates the new articles and leaves them blank or quite literally puts the bare minimum in it I would at least try add to it.

I'd be rather honoured to be able to do something meaningful for SimSig.

Been having a go at the Timetable, Description part and have a quick question
about the Max Speed.

Where different classes of freight are involved, should the Max Speed be that
of the Class.

Taken from this Wikipedia article;

Quote:

Class 3: Freight train which can run at more than 75 mph, parcels train, or empty coaching stock train if specially authorised.

Class 4: Freight train limited to 75mph.

[Class 5 is for Empty Coaching Stock]

Class 6: Freight train limited to 60mph.

Class 7: Freight train limited to 45mph.

Class 8: Freight train limited to, or timed to run at, 35mph or less.

That means that the "Max Speed" you're asking about would likely depends on the locomotive itself or what it is pulling and not the class number.

Hmmm UKTM. If you click "Run at Freight Speed" does SimSig pick up this
class distinction or just the line limitation?

If you enter the train's speed as 90mph but assign it a Class 4 headcode then it would run at upto 75mph. If you then ticked the "Use freight linespeeds" option the train should run at the freight linespeed, which may be lower than the standard linespeed for passenger trains.

So basically, SimSig ought to pick up the linespeed itself, not the train's max speed.

Right, a coupe of things..

If a Class 4 train has on it a loco or wagons that cannot do more than 60mph, then the train gets reclassified with a class 6 headcode.

The max speed of the train therefore is that of the class of train it is.This is the max speed of the train, not the linespeed. A train will travel at it's max speed unless the linespeed is lower. However, freight trains usually travel a at a percentage lower than the line speed, thus by ticking the box, the train will run at the percentage lower than the line speed upto it's max speed.

Just a couple of points oif clarification here.

The sim's TCs are coded with a passenger and freight max speed as per the lineside signs- in most cases this will be the same. The train charateristics are set in the timetable at whatever speed you want the max speed to be. The train will then run at that speed subject to the TC limits and whether it's reading the FRT or PAS limits.

You can set up standard charateristics for a class of train in the timetable editor and allocate those characteristics to any train- you can have one for full and one for an empty train or you can set each train individually so have no standard set. If you want to change the charateristcics as the train moves you need to split the timetable to an A & B working (or whatever).

I was going to incorporate the jist of this table in the WIKI so if you can do that please do.

Returns a class of service for the train - a generic classification that affects things like the amount of delay the train suffers. The classes are currently:

cosECS ECS working
cosExcn Excursion train
cosGoods Goods train
cosLoco Light engine
cosPass Passenger train

and are determined by the first character of ID and the value of frt:
First character
of ID frt value
true false
1 or 2 cosExcn cosPass
3 cosGoods cosECS
4 cosGoods cosGoods
5 cosECS cosECS
6 to 8 cosGoods cosGoods
9 cosGoods cosPass
0 cosLoco cosECS
other cosGoods cosECS

I.e. how each class is treated whether the FRT flag is set or not. This actually comes from the programming manual so needs written into English.

Thanks all. As Peter says "That's clear as Mud".

Will now sit back and have a good read and then see if I can come up
with a good English write up.

Hmm, not formatted well, basically what it says is that if 'freight timings' is ticked (true) the the sim treats it as the first column type and if not (false) then the second. This will also affect how Goods lines are scored. So if a class 1 is FTR=True then it will go on goods lines with no adverse effect- same with Class 9 Class 221 XC -v- unfitted freight.

So,if you are running track recording trains of the 1Qxx variety, or even railtours over freight lines, then by ticking the box, you don't get the phone calls or points deducted??

That is my undestanding- should be easy to test.

If you have 1,2 or 9 and FRT=false then no penalty for running on goods lines. Only slight drawback is that they will run at the reduced speeds where TC is coded.

You have it back to front - if FRT=T you won't get the penalties.

Following on from this message and your requests previously on the shout box, the downloads can be found at "http://www.SimSig.co.uk/dokuwiki/doku.php?id=usertrack:ssinstall:download" - without the quotation marks.

It would probably be easiest is you wrote that down so you could use it any time that you want to get a sim - and, as has been suggested in another Topic, if you save the download to a USB Memory Stick rather than running it from the link, you will always be able to get at and load the sim immediately by double-clicking on the installation file on the USB memory, even if you have lost the link address or the site is down.
