Welcome to SimSig’s 9th offering, that of the North London Line. This area covers numerous signalboxes from Richmond right round to North Woolwich and Barking. It also covers the Temple Mills area, some of which is under reconstruction for the Channel Tunnel works. This simulation is based on pre-Channel Tunnel works, pre-East London Line reopening, and pre-North London Line recontrol/resignalling, and is a hybrid of the route from the 1980s to the early 2000s.
Some of the information here relates to the new version under test, release date TBA.
A two-letter code in between the tracks indicates how that track is electrified. A key is on the far left of the map to remind you what the codes mean. The only real place where this is important is between Camden Road and Dalston Junction. The passenger lines (lower on the screen) are electrified by 3rd rail only, and freight trains designated “E” cannot run this way. The freight lines (upper) are electrified by overhead only. Trains designated “D” may run on either line.
To assist in playing the simulation, there are three automatic options:
Automatic Code Insertion – for simple next train workings, this will interpose the next train in the outgoing train describer berth. This covers Richmond, Willesden High Level, Kensal Green Reversing Siding, Gospel Oak, Camden Road, Camden Road West (reverse), Hackney Wick, Stratford Low Level, Stratford East (reverse), North Woolwich, Upper Holloway, and Barking. At other locations, and where trains divide or join, you will need to interpose these yourself.
Custom House – North Woolwich Auto – sets routes onto the One Train Working (OTW) section, and back out again.
Richmond – Gunnersbury Auto Working – sets routes over Gunnersbury Junction and into and out of Richmond station. This does not cover Acton Central. Note that no regulation is performed, it is simply a first-come-first-served situation.
Four Silverlink Metro services run each way on the NLL from Stratford Low Level to Richmond and vice versa. Two of these are extended to North Woolwich. A couple of extra services on the “core” Stratford to Camden Road section also run during the day. Each train consists of a 3-car class 313 EMU which is capable of running on 3rd rail or 25kv overhead.
Three diesel multiple units form a half-hourly service between Gospel Oak and Barking.
About every 10 minutes, an LUL service comes in from Turnham Green to Richmond, returning a few minutes later.
Half hourly EMU service between Clapham Junction and Willesden Junction High Level.
The North London Line is used heavily by freight trains going around London. Many of these run “as required” or run different routes depending on requirements.
Note that these are generalised and variations may occur. Always check the timetable!

The supplied timetable runs from midnight to 1am the following day. Note that you must start the timetable prior to the first passenger services in order to get the full stock complement into the system. The 2N%%%% and 2J%%%% services never leave the area so the stock to form these services must exist else there will be gaps in the service.
Don’t set routes for trains without checking their timetable. Many freights run early and will potentially block the system up if you let them run before their time. If they have a path, then run them, but check carefully first. It is very easy to get dogknotted and congested on the NLL!
Late running passenger trains may be terminated early by editing their timetable. Make sure you use the “Set next location” button to tell the train where it is.
Trains may be held upon exiting the area to busy locations. Stratford in particular has main line services that will prevent a freight leaving Channelsea Junction until they have a path for it. Some freights will block Channelsea Junction while they wait. For simulation purposes trains will be let through at the following times:
At present, NLL can only be chained to King's Cross , at Finsbury Park, Harringay and Freight Terminal Junction. However, when NLL is refreshed, it will be able to chain to London Euston (at Camden Junction), Wembley Suburban (at Willesden Low Level), Marylebone (at Neasden South Jn), Wembley Mainline (at Willesden Jn, Willesden No.7 Jn, Harlesden Jn, Mitre Bridge Jn and Camden Jn), West Hampstead (at Brent Curve Jn, Criklewood Jn and Carlton Road Jn), Feltham (at Richmond, New Kew Jn and Old Kew Jn), and West Anglia (at Reading Lane Jn, Tottenham South Jn, Coppermill Jn and Seven Sisters).

North London Line Scrolly (beta) Signal Number Plan Speed Limit Plan Schematic layout planThese are Adobe Acrobat PDF files. If you don't have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer you can get a free download of the latest version from the Adobe website . When checked during March 2013, it had reached v11 and the download size was just under 50MB.

This information relates to a Beta version of the simulation released a few years ago on the SimSig website. Since then, SimSig's Beta policy changed and the simulation has been removed from the Download area.
A beta version of NLL scrolly has now been released. Please note that, while it has more features than the paged version, it has not had a full core-code update (i.e. F11 and F8, among other things, are not available).
This section contains details pertaining to the forthcoming beta and may not work or exist in the released version.
This is a hybrid simulation which allows timetables to be run from the 1980s to the present day.
At the time of writing the following should be noted:
Each of the signalboxes in the simulation are single-manned. A client can take over any number of signalboxes and phone calls for that box will be redirected to that client.
