Clive, I was wondering if it would be possible to add a few Up/Down labels? Possibly just below Watford Sidings, at Stonebridge Park, and maybe towards Camden Jn? Currently the only clue is the Up/Down Fast at Watford Jn, and needless to say a few trains at Stonebridge Pk have ended up on the wrong track! Log in to reply |

Aye, but you could go with "Up is always to the right on KX", and yet that has labels!

I also support the idea of having up/down labels as it would be very helpful to me during gameplay. Then again, there is nothing stopping players manually adding a form of labels by using stickies with a black background and one of the two grey font colours. Of-course if Clive would add these labels along with fixing (assuming it can be fixed) the bug with the LU headcodes in Stickies then that'd be great, really appreciated, etc.

I was also wondering about the track circuits at the end of the "Stripes". These do not overlap between stripes - so if looking at Stripe 2, you don't notice a train approaching from Stripe 3 or Stripe 1 until it's already there. Isn't there a design note saying this should never happen, and that a TC should be visible on both Stripes/pages?

Nobody's complained about the lack of Up and Down markers before, but I'll add them to the next version. Danny: I'll discuss things with Geoff. I carefully set the break points so that they're over automatic sections. Ozzy: while it's normal to be Up towards London, it wasn't always that way: the Great Central was Up to Manchester and therefore Down to London; you can still see this in some of the milepost numberings. Midland still Up to Derby MP 0 at southern end of station in 81-82 WTTS at least

NR's April 2009 Sectional Appendix shows St Pancras as MP 0, so possibly late Midland Region or NR's doing.

Sorry Danny didnt make it that clear Yes its up to St Pancras, [0] and down to Carlisle as well as being Down to Bath/Bristol and Up back to Derby London Rd Jcn [0] where the line meets up with the main MR network. The GC Up to Manchester was inherited from the MSL&R being up to Manchester as thats where company HQ was. cant remember which way was up on the old LD&EC from Chesterfield though Passed the age to be doing 'Spoon Feeding' !!! Hi There, I can't say how it was between Sheffield and Manchester, but the Great Central from Sheffield to Marylebone was up to London, down to Sheffield. I was a Passed Fireman at Woodford Halse until closure of the depot. Aubrey Log in to reply |

The GC's London Extension certainly was Up towards Manchester initially. The directions were reversed at some point, but the mileages continue to be measured from 0mp at Manchester, increasing in the Up direction of travel - certainly an unusual, if not unique, situation.

The ELR for the old route (MCJ) is quoted in Quail (the same ELR as is used between L'boro and Ruddington, and south of Claydon LNE, obviously all on the same mileage run). It has no practical application on the GCR though, as we only have one line of route!)

Up & Down do not necessarily point towards London. For Railway employees up is the direction as defined in Table A of the Sectional Appendix.

The most likely place that the changeover would take place has to be Woodhouse Jcn where the GC branched off the old MSLR to Cleethorpes Passed the age to be doing 'Spoon Feeding' !!! Sorry, I meant a change in the line's directions at some point in time, rather than at a point in mileage! Increasing mileage in the Up direction is fairly unusual, but that was what remained after Up became towards London.
