I absolutely hate it when the drivers do that. Out of interest, would something like this happen in real life or would the driver wait until they have actually spoken to the signaller? Or its an auto signal that clears itself - you sometimes also see the phone flashing then clearing without any action from yourself when this happens.

Also happens when train in front clears the section and signal.

It certainly does happen in real life also. Once the signal clears, the Driver would usually have no cause to continue to try to speak to the Signalman. Obviously if the Signalman had a message to pass, he'd keep the signal at Danger until the message had been understood.

im not sure if thats always true? a driver may wait for an answer to ensure the signal hasnt cleared accidentally - eg due to right side failure (i know this was the case at the drax branch with several near misses due to right side track circuit failures

...and, if the signal is going to clear in error, it's more than likely going to do so before the arrival of the train, and not wait for the Driver to come on the phone!
