Looking for a cheap holiday, probably some sort of package late deal. Not interested in beach resorts with nothing nearby which rules a large proportion of holidays out it seems (eg Tunisia, Port El Kantaoui, is quite cheap but not a lot there). Not interested in Benidorm, Spanish Costas or pretty much anywhere overrun by chavvy Brits. Flights and B&B must be £350 or below per person for about a week leaving around 14th November. I'm not asking anybody to trawl the late deals websites - I've done plenty of that. What I'm looking for are ideas. Something interesting, like Petra (too expensive), Greek monuments (out of season in November apparently), etc. I remember some years ago going to Istanbul (which I didn't particularly like) where we arranged via a local (Istanbul) travel agent for a side trip on a boat south west of Antalya which was great - lots of sights - and ended up in a picturesque village called Kos (I think). I don't know if this will be of any help at all, but having read your message, this retweet on Twitter (retweeted by the singer 'Little Boots' came to mind.Or you can skip reading the retweet previously linked to and go straight to these links; Link #1 (this was the link in the retweet). Thanks for the ideas but city breaks in Europe (or skiing) are just so expensive that it's cheaper to go to foreign lands! A half decent hotel in many cities is over £100 a night which eclipses our budget without even getting there. Having thought a bit more about my Turkish trip, perhaps that is an idea worth exploring a bit more, even if we abandon the hotel to jump on a boat for a few days. BTW I normally custom make my own holidays because I can find cheaper prices than high street travel agents who only know about their own package holidays. This time I'm trying to find a late deal - though I realise the days of £99 fly drives to Florida are long gone! SimSig Boss Log in to reply |

Geoff Somewhere different we did a few years ago was Northern Cyprus - not as commercial as the greek side so cheaper , lovely people, some dodgy hire cars but plenty to see apart from beaches - crusader castles, I hope its still as unspoilt. We reckoned we had a better holiday there on a budget than we had had at one of the worlds top notch hotels in Mauritius the year before costing an arm and a leg - proving that what you spend doesnt necessarily make for best holiday. We're renting a villa in Madeira at the end of the month. I don't know how much stuff of interest there is for you there, but you could have a look. Using ebookers-dot-co-dot-uk I was able to find flights from Heathrow, changing in Lisbon, that were under half of Easyjet's prices. And being on a scheduled airline (TAP) you get free baggage and meals. Log in to reply |

Geoff, We went to Nice for our wedding anniversary in November a couple of years ago and had a great time. The heat is definatlely off, but it is still warmer than the UK. The town is busy,and there is a good selection of museums. Public transport along the coast (bus/train) is good to some towns and villages (inc Monaco). Inland there are the "hanging villages" but buses are a few and far between. Expedia has a 7 nights at a "good" hotel (reviews/location) on your dates for £343 from Bristol. Regards, Peter. Maderia did get onto the shortlist but the weather pushed it down a little. Pretty much most of southern Europe is starting to get low 20s by mid/late November so we decided against Cyprus/Turkey/Greece etc. Canaries (Fuerteventura) was 2nd but the flights were a little difficult logistically and we weren't entirely sure how to fill a week there. So in the end, spending a little over the budget, we settled for Sharm El Sheikh with side visits to Cairo and maybe Petra. Seems there's plenty of architectural/biblical stuff near Sharm anyway, and it should be nice and hot. Now to stock up on rehydration sachets and loperamide... Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Geoff, I've been to Sharm el Sheik 2 years ago for a week. You should definitely bring some snorkeling gear there, you can do some fabulous swims over the reef there. We just hired a car there and choose our own spots to swim. We have been to the Catherina cloister (the 'place of the burning bush' but we got a bit overrun by tourist over there, but it is a good place to visit non the less (it will be a lot less overcrowded in between the tourist busses). The only problem we had (besides our hotel playing a pan flute tape, containing 'at the rivers of Babylon' every 10 minutes) was that Sharm lies completely in the middle of nowhere. The only inhabitants are tourists and people who work with tourists. Luckily it is not as bad yet as the spanish coasts though, just make sure you leave (flee?) the town once in a while and you're fine ;).

Thanks Daan, that's reassuring! Inevitably going to be touristy but hopefully not to the extent of every bar being an English bar showing Sky Sports and serving ham, eggs, and chips, and full of chavs. I've got an Open Water certificate though I need refreshing so a dive is almost certain! Ah, yes we have some experience in driving in Africa, so Egypt wasn't a to big of a problem. I think that if you can survive driving in London without hitting anything you should be able to drive over there ;). We haven't been outside the Sinai though, we were to short of a time in the region to go to the Nile. Anyway, it is easy enough to arrange day trips there without a car, there are loads of trip organizers there.
