I need to purchase a new printer but they all seem to be only compatible with XP and above. Now that's OK for our lap-tops (Vista and Win7) but my old desktop is still Win2000 and not worth upgrading. Anyone aware of something I can download that may get round the problem? Peter from my experience working in the trade. "Most" modern printers tend to actually work with 2000 using either the drivers that come in the box they just don't seem to want to advertise the fact. If that fails third party drivers can be found for most printers. The only problem comes when people try to use them on Windows ME which always seems to end in tears. If you're looking at any specific models feel free to let me know and I'll have a look for you. Linux? XP 32-bit drivers may work on Windows 2000, however as 2000 ended support over a year ago I doubt any manufacturer will have tested it. Try Googling the printer model and put "2000" with it, might get some other people trying it. Log in to reply |

A good shout with the HP Photosmart Wifi. As to whether it will work on 2000. The old version of it with the same name, did work with 2000 and ME and said so on the box and in the manual, I'm fairly certain this one does. Though the batch HP have manufactured even omits XP off the box (They have stated they will fix it). Assuming your Desktop is connected to the same router that the printer will be (Even if via cable) you don't need to go the USB route. Pros - Uses a 4 ink model so you're not throwing away ink you haven't used. - "New" version supports Barcode paper detection. - cheap to buy - The old "2000" version can be found on ebay, same specs as the present model but rated to work with 2000. Cons - Touchscreen is prone not to work at all out of the box (PM me for further details) The 4500 was similar to the J6500Q again the J6500Q was rated on the box for 2000 (Though not ME) I'm fairly sure this one will work with it as well. Pros - No Touchscreen so less prone to failure Cons - 2 Cartridge model (901 range isn't cheap either) - Unit cost If you want the fax (Not sure as you've looked at one with and one without fax.) The Photosmart Wifi actually supports Fax over email and HP give you 25 free a month. The Argos site seems riddled with errors. they say the 4500 uses 4 inks, it doesn't it uses the 901 series same as the J6500Q. Black and combined colour. They say the photosmart Wifi doesn't come with a USB lead, all the ones I've unboxed do, though that's possibly a vendor issue. Let me know if you want anymore detail. The in-laws got the Photosmart at Christmas (and I set it up for them). It seems to work well, they didn't have any problem with the touchscreen as suggested by headshot. As a result I bought us the premium model (+ fax & double-sided printing) which is basically the same guts & software & am equally pleased with it. The £40 price tag at Argos is very good, usually printers at that price should be avoided (Lexmark!) Do you have broadband/router? If so then assuming the desktop is connected to this by wire then the printer could still be connected to the network wirelessly and used by the desktop. Log in to reply |

Well for better or worse we've settled on a Kodak Hero 5 which seemed a good deal from Argos and had good write-up particularly in the support side where the help desk is apparently very good. We shall see when I try and get it running after Christmas. Slight tangent now- laptop is fading fast- though since I deleted a particular desk-top shortcut CPU usage has fallen from permanent 100%. Anyway, fed up with VISTA and not sure about Win7, can you still buy laptops with XP installed from new. Digging around seems to indicate you can but I've not actually found a retailer who does and I'd not want to buy one off Ebay Peter I identify as half man half biscuit - crumbs! Log in to reply |

We always found Kodak support good when we had a Kodak too. I think you can still find some laptops that come with a dual licence, so they can be rolled back to XP, but not sure if you can still buy them with it installed. You're right to avoid Vista, but from what I've heard 7 is much better than Vista, my wife's new laptop had win7 and has been good so far. Log in to reply |

I wouldn't be worried about Windows 7, myself and many others on here use it with no issue. Though I'm skeptical that I've just read Kodak and good technical support. AFAIK XP stopped being sold to system builders almost 3 years ago, everything now will be Windows 7. If you really want XP then you're going to have to install it yourself and hope that drivers are available.

You can still get a few desktop machines that are sold with a Win7 Pro licence but XP Pro installed, for the benefit of companies that still use XP as their standard OS. HP, for one, manufacture them.
