My wife's friend in NZ sent her a DVD for her birthday ages ago and it's the wrong region for our DVD player, now at the time I found a reference on the internet on how to alter that particular DVD player. That player has since expired. We had another one in the loft, so dug it out but we need to change the setting on that one now, but I can't find anything on the internet that refers to that model. Sony RDR-VX410, anyone able to advise? Also we thought of just playing it on the lap-top and again there is a region issue, save that here it gives you an option of changing the region but it says that if you change it 5 times it'll stick at whatever you end up with- any ides how to circumvent that? (Not always, but if VLC can't do it then I don't think anything can.) Log in to reply |

VLC media player has never failed me when playing non region 2 DVDs. The other options is if like me you have more than one DVD drive is to region set the others to different regions. Also if it's a 32bit version of Windows DVD43 will get through region protection. Nor me, but according to the VideoLAN FAQ it depends on your DVD drive.

Peter, As a standard measure all computers seem only to allow you to change the region setting seven times. I suppose it is piracy, copying and all that. The one good programme that I came across and used for a long time when I was using a Compaq was Win DVD region free. This worked a treat. It did have a small fee to be paid but as I say it worked perfectly and you could adjust it so that it cut out some of the tiles on the menu as well. I believe it is still free on the internet for a short trial period but it does not last long and seems to finish just as you are getting interested in what you are watching. Unfortunately I don't know if you can still get it though As for my SONY laptop I tried and tried to get a programme that would work but to no avail and I would agree with the others it depends on your laptops drive. I use Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit and have just found the DVD settings for my machine. Apparently I have 4 more Region changes left (have never changed it in the time I've had the laptop). Am I correct that the software mention in other posts lets me make unlimited changes? Never thought about this problem before even though I play all my DVDs through the computer.

DelticFan. VLC Media Player simply plays DVDs that are not region 2, even though they are in a region 2 drive. I tend to buy region 1 DVDs when I get TV Boxsets. For some reason our DVD player in the lounge also plays region 1 DVDs, something to do with it being a rather old one me thinks. Peter if you want a player that runs them, go on eBay, get yourself a working one from the early 2000s, most didn't have region protection on them.

Well tried VideoLan- nothing doing, tried DVD43 but it just spat the DVD out so I had to un-install. Anyway after some more digging it does appear that my player (Matshita) is virtually un-hackable due to the way it interacts with the DVD- might be possible with some firmware changes but risky. I think buying a new player just so my wife can watch Pride and Prejudice is probably a bit excessive.
