Southwards from Keighley 12/09/2011 at 17:07 #20894

Hi all,

Does anyone know of any mechanical / old-type signalboxes that might be easy to photograph, without too much deviation, on a journey southwards from Keighley? Work takes me there tomorrow (Tuesday): train up and then I drive back to Bristol in the vehicle I am collecting. However I will have to break a bit along the way back as I won't do 190+ miles in one stretch.

Therefore info on locations of any mechanical / old-type signalboxes that might be easy to get photos of (legitimately, of course) will be welcome.

Thanks.
Dave

There are some near Kidderminster but other than that I can't think of any.

Hmm. Pity. I have it in mind to try and do Stalybridge though after finding that one not to be too far off my route. Have also got it in mind to do Nantwich in order to complete that line as I already have Crewe Bank, Harlescott Lane LC, Wem, Prees and Whitchurch.

My photos of Harlescott Lane LC are not too good though to I may give that one another look.

Dinting (near Glossop) has a signal box on the platform.

Quail shows signal boxes on the Stockport-Sheffield line and in the Buxton area.
Quail also shows the Stoke-on-Trent - Uttoxeter - North Stafford Jn (Derby-Bermingham line) as having old style signal boxes. They were still semephore signal last time I went this way, but that was several years ago. This line has several level crossings so photography shouldn't be too difficult.

There are also boxes at Arlewas (of the A38 near the National Memorial Arbouritum) and Lichfield TV High Level, both with level crossings (footpath only at Lichfield). I think these have colour light signals.

There are boxes on the Walsall-Rugeley line at Bloxwich (LC), Hednesford (station) and Brereton Sidings (Rugeley Town station).

Hope this helps. I'm sure others will correct me if progress has overtaken my list.

Peter.

If heritage will do, you'll probably be driving almost right past the East Lancs Railway. Ramsbottom box is immediately beside its level crossing, and Bury South is visible from Jubilee Way in Bury (no direct public access though). Smaller crossing boxes also at Townsend Fold and Rawtenstall West.

Thanks for all the replies received. However I couldn't get any photos done in the end because my camera decided it wasn't going to play ball. Camera is now in the repair workshop. Bad timing as I go away on 22nd September and may not get it back until the following Thursday which is 3 days after I get back! Grrrr......

Slightly belatedly - Chinley's a panel, and not very Midland! Works AB to Peak Forest, I believe - not sure about the other two directions.

egg on my face slightly - is indeed a panel (the errors of copy and paste) works AB to peak forest sth, AB with intermediate block to edale, and TCB to new mills junction
