3631 posts 		when the clocks go back or forward, is there an official time that all clocks on the system change? obviously this can have a big effect on timetabling, signalling and live departures boards .

any info on how its handled?

3925 posts 		Officially, the clocks go back at 2AM, so live departure boards won't be affected since no passenger trains (except sleepers) are likely to be running at that time. Don't know about freight though.

3631 posts 		even then, regards timetabling and operations - a train passing say for instance brightside stn jcn at 01:59 will then pass holmes at 01:03 (02:03)- how does the railway deal with this?

Online 		I remember a friend of mine telling me about the time he was on an East Coast sleeper the night the clocks changed and on that night the booked diversion was not in place and as a result the train was over 2 hours early into Kings Cross! Mind you back in 1980 something, when the Pope visited the UK weekend engineering work was suspended on the WCML and the train I was on kept waiting time at every station in one case (Crewe I think it was) it stopped for over 1/2 hour.

1098 posts 		I remember seeing a STP notice for the Western Region many years back for the weekend the clocks went back.

The down beds to Penzance were booked to sit on the Relief line at Silk Mill for the hour to pass, the Up beds were booked to sit in Temple Meads till booked departure after arriving a technical hour early
Passed the age to be doing 'Spoon Feeding' !!!

707 posts 		I've worked nights when the clocks went forward, and train timetables just jump forward an hour from 00:59 GMT to 02:00 BST, so a train can be 3 mins early, then 63 early, then back to 3 early very quickly. I believe that timetables over the change backward have the correct series of locations, and when the times get to 02:00 BST they jump back to 01:01 GMT, so you can get repeat times in a schedule.

746 posts 		So I assume when the clocks go forward for an hour, the sleeper ends up an hour late instead?

I do wonder how some night trains on FCC, Southern do with being an hour late if it happens, I assume passengers are reminded to use common sense and try not to put in a Delay Repay for being 60 minutes late!

310 posts 		When the clocks go back and there are two of each time from 0100 to 0159, how does one unambiguously record which one is which? I had to make a record last night of something which happened five minutes before the change. I wrote "0155 (first)", then realised that was clumsy and possibly still confusing - so I changed it to "0155 BST", which I thought was quite clever seeing as the next one would be 0155 GMT, but I'm not sure whether it was the 'right' way of doing it. Any ideas?

2738 posts 		Using "BST" and "GMT" is as good a method as any. There isn't an official system in the UK (some countries use "0130A" and "0130B".

The official changeover time is 0100 GMT in both directions throughout the EU. So we changed from 0200 BST to 0100 GMT, but Greece changed from 0400 to 0300 since they're two hours ahead of us.

I seem to recall a bit of a discussion a while back about the forum time on posts which resulted in me clicking on the "Your details" link in the menu and changing the time zone from "(UTC 00:00) Western Europe, London, Lisbon, Casablanca, Reykjavik" to (UT +01:00) Amsterdam, Berlin, Brussels, Copenhagen, Madris, Paris", but I have now gone back to "(UTC 00:00) Western Europe, London, Lisbon, Casablanca, Reykjavik".

Online 		Posting time is picked up from whatever UTC time-zone you are set up to be in. If you change the time zone then all your past posts are re-stamped with a revised time. UTC does not change with the localised clock changes such as the UK's move to and from BST.

870 posts 		I seem to think that what has been said is only partially correct.
I made a post this morning (about the mail video by Chris) and it was South Korean time which is now 9 hours in front of the UK (our clocks did not go back) and on the posting header it previously showed as 06:43 in the morning which was correct....are you following me so far...anyway it now shows as 06:43 yesterday. That cannot be correct as it is still today over here and is also today over there in good old UK.......ummmm

Fixed, though it should be noted Joomla (the core software behind the site) has timezone issues in general.

126 posts 		Having read through this topic, I'm still unclear with how the clock changes are dealt with operationally. It seems that the clocks will go back in the UK tonight at 0200 BST (to 0100 GMT).

There is a scheduled King's Cross departure for Welwyn Garden City tonight, leaving at 01.11 and due to arrive at 01.55 (duration 44 minutes). Will this service depart at 01.11 BST or 01.11 GMT? I suspect it won't run twice?

There is also an earlier 00.53 departure, arriving at 01.20 (duration 1 hour 27 mins(!), continues to Stevenage). This is scheduled to call at Potters Bar (01.10) and Hatfield (01.16). Presumably this will only run once and won't stop and wait somewhere for an hour?

From the First Capital Connect website (guess all TOCs would be the same)

"Please remember that the clocks go back one hour to Greenwich Mean Time at 02.00 on Sunday morning. Trains will continue to operate to British Summer Time until the close of service."

117 posts 		Live train reporting is done by a computer program called TRUST. TRUST shuts down every Saturday night for maintenance ,updates etc! so it is not affected by the clocks going forward or back

The obvious question then is what happens to 24-hour services? Do TPE still run through the night at weekends?
