Hi,

Just a passing thought but at the moment the line from Redbridge Junction to Romsey only goes a short way.

In view of the fact that Eastleigh panel controls not only Romsey but all the way up to Mottisfont & Dunbridge - I gather that SY01 is on the platform at M&D in the Salisbury direction - could I suggest that the Southampton sim be expanded to include Mottisfont & Dunbridge and Romsey stations as well as the line from Romsey to Eastleigh via. Chandlers Ford?

The LC at Mottisfont & Dunbridge could be included but only to show when it is open & closed: it just falls under Salisbury's books I think. A thing to show what train is approaching from Salisbury would also be good. AFAIK the line from Romsey to Eastleigh is mostly OTW so nothing too complex on the signalling front: mostly the junctions at Romsey and Eastleigh.

Also, if this were to go ahead, the Southampton sim could be divided into 3, possibly 4, workstations.

Anyone else interested in this idea?

Dave

It would be cool - it would require Eastleigh, which might be a bit fun, though - it'll force me to actually think about sending freight to Eastleigh at the right time (though it might be easier if the new goods loop at Eastleigh is implemented).

The level crossings on {Eastleigh, Redbridge} --> Romsey --> Salisbury are all AHBs - I don't know what the general SimSig convention is, if any (being a newbie), but I would assume that you wouldn't have to control these directly, at least in the forward direction.

In fact, if you're going down that route, might as well include Eastleigh to Fareham line as well, at least partially. I'm sure that'll be fun to operate because of the single track, especially if line closures are simulated so it gets more intensive use.

It's something that would be cool if it could happen.

I visited the Eastleigh Panel recently and think this would make an interesting sim, plenty of freight traffic, and some busy single line sections requiring good regulation of traffic. The panel is normally controlled by 3 signallers, who manually work the barriers at Totton, Mount Pleasant and St Denys. The area covered extends from near Brockenhurst almost to Basingstoke (Battledown Flyover)and includes the Wallers Ash loops. A new up loop is being installed from Southampton Airport to Eastleigh to accommodate freights which stop at Eastleigh platform for crew change and currently block the main line because of their length.

Eastleigh Panel also controls the lines from Eastleigh to Fareham (with 2 single line sections) to just beyond Cosham, the Netley line from St Denys to Fareham, the Salisbury line from Redbridge to Romsey to just beyond Mottisfont, and the Eastleigh to Romsey line (mostly single line) with AHB at Halterworth, and access to the various freight facilities including Southampton docks and the large East Yard and works at Eastleigh.

Eastleigh works also includes a loop which is used for turning steam hauled charters, and also light locos which may work back from Swanage to Eastleigh just for turning.

I understand that Eastleigh Panel is now somewhat dated and will be transferred to the Basingstoke Signalling Centre in due time.

With those boundaries I feel that Eastleigh will be odd (if realistic) with Southampton as a 'black hole with rules'.

Given the copious ARS the pair could be viable as a single sim, much like SWIN-DID.
A long stetch of line is good to ensure that regulating errors have consequences !

There's nothing to say Southampton does not remain as a stand-alone.

Someone on a multiplayer recently said that we could have to wait up to a year for Eastleigh if the decision was ever taken to release it. When I had my old machine someone sent me an EXE version of Eastleigh: nice sim and largely playable but there was a bug with Northam Depot IIRC. I think I have a screenshot somewhere though but I am not sure if I would get away with posting it on here.

Mind you, just think. If Eastleigh was released then it would provide two megachain opportunities:

1. Portsmouth (2 panels) -> Eastleigh (3 panels) => Salisbury (1 player) => Westbury (3 players) => Bristol (4 panels), making a total of 13 players.

or

2. Portsmouth (2 panels) -> Eastleigh (3 panels) => Salisbury (1 player) => Westbury (3 players) => Reading (2 panels) => Swindon (3 panels, also chains to Westbury) => Bristol (4 panels), total of 18 players.

which would both be fun.

Not forgetting that Bristol (which has five panels not four) also chains to Gloucester and Exeter...

And Reading will chain to Feltham, which chains to Wimbledon...
