Do any of you more senior members of SimSig know the Train ID's of the Anglo-Scottish sleeper services Between Glasgow/Edinburgh - Bristol TM/Plymouth for the year 1979-1980. I'm currently writin a timetable for Saltley based on 1979-1980 & have all the relevant WTTs for it. However the overnight Anglo-Scottish services in the WTT don't indicate they are sleeper services. The train in particular I'm struggling with is 1V57 2345 SUN Edinburgh - Bristol Temple Meads/Plymouth, the timing load is D420 which is diagrammed for a Landore Cl.47/4 from Birmingham New Street & according to the loading equates to 12 Mk.1 coaches. The train runs via Carlisle as it appears inthe Carlisle station working book for 14th May, 1979-11th May, 1980 which are the dates of the WTTs I'm using, but it doesn't state that it is a sleeper. Having said that 1V56 2355 SX Glasgow Central - Bristol Temple Meads is a sleeper service as the timing load is much higher at D560. Just wondered whether anyone has traveled on it in the past or even remembers seeing it.

As far as I can recall, 1V57 was Vac Brake, Dual heat and was seating accommodation only.

(In later years you could sometimes get a 26 on the Edinburgh- Carstairs bit!)

Cheers

I had a feeling you might have known the answer Peter. Thanks for the confirmation of 1V57. I assumed it was a sleeper service as the timing loads was higher than that of 1V56. Timetable altered to show sleepers on train.

Sorry did not read much beyond the "Does anyone know the ID" part. I travelled regularly on these services, probably in later years, when doing All-Line Rovers and even Freedom of Scotlands (nice change at Carlisle at 1am). I'd have said both trains conveyed sleeping compartments but I have absolutely no evidence to back that up- it's just some vague recollection of Platform 16 at Waverley but that might have been the portion. As to what the consist actually was I don't know save that as Railrover says the seating parts were generally MK1 vd SK/FK(declassified) stock where you could get a reasonable kip.

Just had a thought and rummaged around the loft but I don't have the 1979/80 timetable. I do have one from 1975/6 year and there the train was EDB only to Bristol (sleeper) and there was a relief too, again Edinburgh only. Infact there were some interesting sleeper services in that timetable- e.g. Glasgow to Nottingham, Barrow to Euston and such like.

In 1986 Summer there were two trains but both were GLC/EDB portioned trains and both conveyed sleepers on both portions- I think we were into MK3 Sleepers by then and MK2a/b/c TSO carriages.

Interesting stuff Peter. The 2 Carlisle station working books I've got one dated 03rd May, 1976 to 01st May, 1977 & the other 14th May, 1979 to 11th May, 1980 (which also includes all the Penmanshiel diversions) show that neither 1V56 2355 Glasgow Central - Bristol TM & 1V57 2345 Edinburgh - Bristol TM/Plymouth are sleepers. Unfortunately the first time I went to Scotland on the 'sleepers' was in September 1985 on 1S19 2124 Bristol TM - Glasgow Central/Edinburgh with 47567 on the front just after it was named 'Red Star'. The train split at Carstairs & we were hauled to edinburgh waverley by 477xx, can't remember the number of that one, whilst heading to Inverness. The following night I got as far as Carlisle & caught the sleeper from London Euston to Fort william via the engine change in Mossend yard to Glasgow Queen Street & then forward to Fort William with 37xxx & 'Ethel 3'. Got some photos of that trip. So this timetable is a bit before my time, hence the reason I asked for the info. The station working book for Carlisle 1976-1977 does have a sleeper emblem to denote sleeping cars on services, but the 1979-1980 edition doesn't, unless in the remarks column there is some shunting at Carlisle being done where sleeping cars/parcel vans are attached or detached.
