9 times out of ten its through your web browser the browser is the most powerful tool for any virus or hacker. you would be suprised what you could do with a web browser, dont use IE it always has security flaws.
I have had no problems with IE since Adam was a boy! lol. If you do, you have not set it up correctly. Incorrect settings on your router? You have to remember the saying "Garbage in, garbage out". lol.

I assume you (or someone else on your machine) installed it, that or it came in through some unpatched software.

What stuff did you add yourself?
What I said right at the beginning- Avast, AdAware and something my bank recommended (Rapport or something like that) and Windows 7 Firewall Control (seems to work on VISTA). I think there is some Port protection too but I can't remember what it is- oh and my Router apparently has some firewall but I've not explored that.

Peter, if you are running or going to run Win 7 or Vista, I suggest you download Microsoft Security Essentials. It is free and I have found it excellent. No problems with it and it is automatically updated every day.

"Ask Leo" is an excellent site for resolving computer problems. Well worth a look. Been going for the last 10 years.

Rapport is a password protector of sorts - it identifies what passwords you use for accessing online accounts, whether bank, forums, shopping, etc. sites and will alert you if you try to enter a recognised password into an unrecognised website (e.g. a site masquerading as something it isn't, like fake bank sites linked from phishing emails). You can then approve it if you know that you are at the correct URL or get out before without having given the password away!

I had to reinstall everything after uploading Rapport - it slowed the whole thing to a crawl! Run my PC with Vista. May be coincidence?

I've read this thread with interest as I use Vista Home Premium. I gave up with IE8 as compared with Google Chrome it's quite slow. I have AVG internet security 2012 and everything seems to run fine together, including regular Windows updates. I certainly haven't been aware of any of the problems mentioned in previous posts.

Yes that's the one.

Anyway all seems well with the thing now with no problems beyond the hoizontal hold on the dodgy screen.

I've had it on a couple of PCs without any problems (although they are XP not Vista)
