Thought I'd post some images of my day :D

For those that are interested, I am a watchkeeper for the NCI. Basically I sit in a hut on the edge of a cliff and make sure the sea is being friendly to vessels. :)

This 'ere is inside the hut (including obligatory mug of tea)

AIS is the system we use to spy on the big boys in the Traffic Separation Scheme, shown below with Radar output above.

Another very useful tool for spying is the VHF radio. Many amusing conversations can be heard, I assure you.

Close up of the AIS. Notice the ship "Ciudad De Cadiz"? She's off to collect some Airbus wings.

We've got *real* charts as well, you know!

F-I-S-H... erm H-I-N-G, we're fishing! (To the tune of "Shopping" by The Pet Shop Boys)

So anyway, I'm sure some of you will be interested, and if you go to Marine Traffic you can view the location of any ship in range of a receiver!

Laryk,
Interesting pictures and shows some of the equipment that I am familiar with.
Currently we are building a ship over in South Korea which should, fingers crossed be sailing past your window sometime at the beginning of January 2013.
Call sign 3EYH5. You should be able to pick it up on the AIS as she goes by although when operational she would problem be on your screen for some time.

A bit of a different view from your window to most of the people on this forum and probably a lot colder too.........

Geoff - I'm fairly certain I can set up an alert based on name/callsign when it enters the area. In any case, I'll be sure to out for it.

It is a wonderful place to be. When it's stormy you could be mistaken for being on the bridge of a ship.
Don't you worry about the cold - it's got heaters

MMSI number may be better for you 354 590 000. but obviously not transmitting yet.
Our bridge is still in the making but is starting to take shape now.

Must be a very interesting job, I expect Folkestone must be on thier toes all the time with all the cross channel ferries and cargo ships in a 20 mile wide area.

For those a wee bit interested. Just a brief update on this as I said I would.
Our ship (the AEGIR)that we have been building for the last 18 months sails tomorrow on her maiden voyage. 8 a.m. South Korea time 11.00 p.m UK time.

South Korea-China-Singapore-Durban-Schiedam (Holland)No short cut through Suez.

You might be able to pick her out on the AIS live web page sometime next week.

A bit different to watching the track of the HST on the web pages.

I have used the marine tracking site in the past to show someone why they can't have parts delivered because that's where the vessel they are on is

Then you get the response well can't you charter a small boat and pick the parts up from the vessel, um yes we could , just one small problem our parts are in that container in the stack of 1000

Can't win sometimes

A good ships manifest should be able to locate it within minutes but getting it out is another thing. The latest generation of container ships has just been started over here with a capacity of 18,000 containers on board.......yes I did say eighteen thousand.....unbelievable

I understand you can locate, my customers then can't understand why it can't be just taken off and put on a speed boat. Lol

One once asked why it took so long for parts to come by sea from Japan, I suggested she try walking it and see how quick she could do it
