Messing around with Google Earth I've noticed two trains pretty close up on the Up Fast line at Welwyn Garden City (Just north of the station). The distance between them seems less than 50 meters. Unless I've seen wrong, what are the possible explanations? I can think of two outright but am interested to hear others. a) The second set (northernmost) was requested to move forward in the hope of aiding the other set due to breakdown b) One terrific SPAD (actually probably would require two - one at signal 620 and one at sig. 624)  Regards, Nicholas Log in to reply |

The maps are created using several satelite pictures joined together. There is obviously a join somewhere between the two trains. There is 1 place, can't remember where, where the join goes througha car, making it look like car has been cut in half at the side of the road

My guess its the same train, from the same camera, taken a few seconds apart. The picture is from Dec. 30 2006, if anyone has any data. If it had failed, I figure they would get some heavy freight loco and pull it somewhere, and the 2nd train would just be routed around it on to the slow. If the 2nd train did SPAD because of the first train, then I think that driver is no longer employed as a driver  By the way, have you seen this guys work on there? http://bbs.keyhole.com/ubb/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=995695 He's mapping all the closed and abandoned stations in the UK and Wales. Is it the derailment on the Derby lines on the way out of Birmingham New Street, past the Lawley Street Freightliner Terminal. He He, might make a good senario on the Saltley sim, if it is the picture I am thinking of. Log in to reply |

Going bake to WGC one, both trains are the same one I think. You can see the WiFi pod on the roof of the leading DVT of both- so an GNER/whatever set; so if that is correct then the more southern image is too short- I think the 91 should be visible beyond the bridge. On that basis the more southern shot was taken second and it is also slightly more washed out than the earlier shot. Peter I identify as half man half biscuit - crumbs! Log in to reply |

Changing the location I was looking at Morden Northern Line depot on Google Earth once just out of interest and I saw what honestly looked like a 4+[sup]1/2[/sup] train, as in I saw four whole carriages and the fifth carriage was only half there. I kinda had a 'wrong' thought about it: Take a look for yourself, load up Google Earth, use the search box and type in either "Morden Ct" or "SM4 5HN" and see if you can find it. Saw this the other day which reminded me of this thread - just thought I'd share. Unfortunately the Morden one appears to have been changed/updated at some point. The Ulceby train is around 20m long on the Google Maps picture. I just looked up the length of a class 153 on Wikipedia: 23,2m. It is not stretched at all (if this is indeed a 153).

And here's another interesting one. At first, I was like "What the...." as I wasn't sure what I was seeing and was even thinking surely it's not like some odd freight train or something but then I realised! Think this'll be first time I've seen one from 'top down'. Worth a look...
