first - youll need all the arrivals and departures for sheffield station, including, preferably, TOC and unit allocation, also preferably platform number.

you can then work out what forms what when etc.

thats for a start

Try looking on Open Train Times. In Advanced mode, this will give you headcodes, platform numbers, and junction passing times.

it would- at 00:00 - 01:00 while units are shunting around and being fuelled, but seeding them in from the HS just before their working wouldnt block platforms in the same way the real thing does

If you click the Index tab on this forum and follow the page down to Timetables, there is a forum section named Timetable chat. This can also be accessed via the Categories drop-down list near the upper RH corner of the Recent Topics page. This thread properly belongs there.

You will also find some helpful links to creating timetables in the Wiki (check the INDEX).

the correct path for a train from manchester to sheffield is: grindleford, totley tunnel east, dore and totley (if stopping), dore station junction, sheffield
i would advise you to check this is correct.

cant help with the other one, but if you analyse the timetable, you might find that 1y01 is not a valid train and so the ECS will refuse to form it.
