The ones in Cambridge show "14:26" if they're just working off the timetable, and "3 mins" if they're basing it on live reports. You often see a mix on the same sign.
I don't think I've ever seen one give HH:MM, only "3 mins" type of thing, though they do switch to "Due" when <2 minutes. I've not seen a bus late enough to notice whether it's showing a predicted or timetable time.

The only clues I've had are overhearing the radio conversations along the lines of "Where are you, driver?" and - as I said earlier - the buses falling off the display fairly quickly after departure. Might also depend on the bus I guess, as some have the auto-announcers, some don't.

Well we did from an early start on a Saturday on my 24th birthday trip when the newer south extension opened on the 5th March. Start here at 7am on the first 49 (Stagecoach) to Swindon then the 15A to Oakhurst Way then around a 7 minute walk to the railway.
I guess it's not as far as I thought. When they get the full extension south to run alongside the Kemble-Swindon line and build a station there, you'll be able to get a train all the way. I can see the pigs flying already.

Depends whether it's done under S144, or other powers.

Would normally be done under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 and Local Government Act (85?)

Seems quite comprehensive analyses of the matter- obviously from a slightly jaundiced viewpoint but an analyses non-the-less.

And a Judgement which sets out some of the legal interactions.

1) would be indicated by road markings & blue rectangular signs, but 2) would more likely be signed with red border regularity signs, indeed that is what I suspect has been blanked out in Geoff's photo.
More likely to be this blue circular sign: without the "only" plate. [Why is this image distorted when inserted as an image link?]

Just out of interest, there are a number of bus only streets in the Washington area of Tyne and Wear. These are indicated by a no motor vehicles sign and a qualifier below saying 'Except buses'. There are no markings on the road. Hopefully if the attached link to Google Maps works you will see what I mean.

I appreciate that there may be different ways of doing these sort of bus street things, just showing how it is done somewhere else.

I wonder if Google had permission to go through that road?!

On a related note, we were queuing in one lane of a double lane road with a bus lane to our left. Somebody decided they didn't want to queue and shot off down the bus lane and promptly collided with a car pulling out of a side road, then bouncing off at least one of the innocent cars stopped in the queue. Now, the first car shouldn't have been there in the first place, and the second car should have given way regardless. I wonder how the insurance companies will deal with that one?

Arguably the second car may have been justified in assuming that the only reason the first car should have been coming down the bus lane was in order to turn left into the road that the second car was turning out of, so that their paths should not have met.
