Following the suggestion some time ago of a SimSig meet in Dublin we decided to visit (Not a SimSig meet just to be clear) and are off next Saturday. Now we have the usual guide books from the Library but if anyone has any suggestions of places to see and things to do there (or nearby by train) that maybe not in guide books and that would be suitable for a 10 year old boy I'd be interested to hear. I understand that the 08.50 Euston Holyhead is a 57 dragged Pendo next Saturday so that's a bonus!! If you can call a Pendo and a super-Duff a bonus; but it has to be better than a Voyager. Dublin has trams if he's into that sort of thing. On our last trip we had a tourist trap horse & cart ride, but then it was a romantic thing to do apparently, but fairly interesting anyway. Peter, it was me who suggested a Dublin meet!! some places that are along the rail line you might be interested in visiting are as follows: St. James gate brewery (guinness's) - this is 20 mins from Dublin Connolly, by luas light rail (tram) st. james's stop. Croke Park - HQ of the GAA (visited by the queen this week) - this is about 15 mins walk from Dublin Connolly. The Aviva Stadium - Home of irish soccer (FAI) and irish rugby (irfu) - this is facing the exit of Landsdowne road. The viking splash tours - land and water tour of dublin - depature for this tour is on st stephen's green - 15 mins walk from Dublin Pearse. Trinity College (also visited by the queen this week) - this is about 5 mins walk from Dublin Pearse or Tara Street. National Sea life centre Bray - about 5 mins walk from bray. Fry's moddel railway malahide castle - about 10 mins walk from malahide. Dublin Zoo - Phenonix park - best accessed by bus, number 46A from o'connell st. Imaginosity children's mussem - sandyford industrial estate - luas light rail from st stephen's green. National Wax Mussem - temple bar - 5 mins walk from Tara Street. Lambert Puppet theater - 5 mins walk from Salthill & Monkstown. There is depending on your son's interests also some good historical and heritage towns along the railway line such as Dun Laoghaire, Dalkey, Malahide, howth and Bray. The rail stations mentioned above are on the following lines: Malahide, Howth, Bray, Dun laoghaire, Dalkey, Salthill & Monkstown, Landsdowne Road, Dublin pearse, Tara Street and Dublin Connolly are all on the DART line. Dublin Connolly, Tara Street, Dublin Pearse and Malahide are also severed by non-stop commuter services. While Dun laoghaire and Bray are served by the Dublin - Roslare Europort intercity service as well as the Dart. Imaginosity is on the luas green line St Stephen's Green - Cherrywood, Guinness's is on the luas red line the point (dublin's O2 arena) - Tallaght. O'connell street and surounding street is the main bus terrminus area for bus services serving the suburbs of dublin. There is plenty more places to see in dublin depending on your son's interests. there is marine, heritage, sports, history, architecture, art, science and leisure. Some interesting ideas there, I'll take a print with me. I particularly like the Viking tour myself, looks like fun. I'd not worry too much about his likes; it's usually "not interested" but later turns into "that was fun" - so most kiddies things will probably turn out fine as long as he has his "DS" to time out with! Imaginosity does look his thing though (and mine). A trip out of town looks good to Malahide had caught my eye earlier. Peter I identify as half man half biscuit - crumbs! Log in to reply |

yeah malahide is a nice area, if your son is into soccer the irish soccer team train right beside malahide castle in Malahide united's pitch and as far as I am aware the team will be out there next weekend preparing for our Carling Nations Cup match with scotland. And you might even pick up cheap tickets to that match next sunday outside the Aviva Stadium, usually €20 for adults and €10 for kids. and of course the sealife centre in bray is out of the city too which is usually a good hour and a half to 2 hours entertainment, its situated on the seafront in bray which this time of the year usually has carnivals along the promenade and also has an amusments and games arcade too. Imaginosity is great fun for kids and adults alike, well worth a visit.

We don't do Football but I had noticed that Ireland are apparently playing Pakistan at Cricket on Monday which might have been interesting given Ireland's performance recently - only problem it's in Belfast! Peter Log in to reply |

Bit of feed-back, which maybe of interest to anyone else thinking of going. In the end we kind of ran out of time to do all the things I'd pencilled in and never got out of the City at all! Got a 3 day bus pass which included the city tour (unlimited), what we now don't know about the first sector of the tour is probably not worth knowing as we did it about 10 times! Could have done with a service-route map in retrospect. Anyway, stayed in the Castle Hotel on the North side (pleasant enough) and did Trinity (just a walk around), the Waxworks was really interesting though I wonder if the person who did the John Major and Ian Paisley models were try to make a political point as they were not that good compared to the rest! Dublin Castle, though we ended up not going round on the guided tour. Dublin Zoo was excellent, one of the better ones I've been to. Passed Jedward's house (allegedly). Popped into Heuston and Connelly stations for a wee nosey and did the tram between. As an aside on the way from the Ferry Port we passed a yard full of what looked like pristine orange/Black rakes of coaches- are they still used as everything we saw running was in a silvery inter-city livery. lastly we did "Dublina" which was an interesting history of the city. One observation, when we paid by credit card we had the option of paying Sterling or Euro, having now compared transactions there is little in it in terms of applied conversion rate. peter the orange and black coaches are only used for the wesport and limerick sevices, and GAA specials, they will be going out of use next year.
