It really is quite simple. It is beneficial to keep holding meets every now and again to allow people to meet for the first time and keep in touch, and also to keep the profile of the hobby up a bit. Unfortunately it isn't always possible to have the release of a new sim to co-incide with said meet. To that end I don't think it is realistic for anyone to expect that. It's a coincidence that this has happened on occasion. I also see no problem with just meeting up for a natter and a few jars rather than co-ordinating a multiplayer session. The first meet I attended in 2006 (Bristol) I recall there being very little in the way of gaming going on, it was more incidental that a few people had brought laptops. I can see that not having all the whistles and bells might disappoint a few folk but it was never intended to be. There is nothing to stop someone organising their own meet if what is on offer does not suit their needs. For what's it's worth, I attended the Derby meet last year (my first ever) and it was great to 'put names to faces'. I didn't join any sessions, just enjoyed both watching the experts and the social side and found I had a bit of common ground with some guys I spoke to, having worked in the rail industry for some years. Certainly trying to get to the one on the 10th (present circumstances permitting). The developers/organisers do a terrific job in providing what we have already . Long may they continue. I spend hours playing sims. I am not involved in developing or testing. I am extremely grateful for those who are and for the time they devote to this. I eagerly await the release of new sims but know they will come when they come. To those who put their spare time into this, please take this message of appreciation as a counter-balance to what has been said above and as hopefully something that stands for the usually silent majority and.... let's all move on. As most have families and other lives that will soon complain if neglected, sim work also has to be fitted around those obligations - and rightly so. As this is a hobby for the creators, it is their choice how they do it. If they want to release a sim at a meet to get a sense of how it behaves in the real world, that's their choice. If they don't want to release anything until they've had their group of testers give it such a going over that nothing can possibly have been missed (therefore it takes a decade or so to get from beta to release), that too is their choice and their absolute right. Ray: it is not for you to make downright nasty snide remarks like this just because your wishes are not the centre of everybody's consideration! Apologies to the rest of the forum for sounding rather angry. (The fact is, I am rather angry.) Posting in this way is a very deliberate, conscious choice (in my line of work I'm used to weighing what I say very carefully and saying only those things I really mean and whose impact I really appreciate). It's possible a moderator may feel I've overstepped the mark. But I hope not - sometimes the facts of life need to be spelled out in a way that's absolutely unmistakeable. It appears, from earlier posts of his, that Ray has an issue with the perceived injustice of Sims being released at meets, and only being available to people at those meets. Change the record. I've been waiting years for one particular area to be simulated, and I haven't said a word on it. I suspect it's in the pipeline from a dropped hint a few years ago, so I'm happy to wait until it arrives (which may be never). Maybe I should go to all the meets so I can get my hands on the millions of sims that the developers are unfairly withholding from us ... Log in to reply |

Ray. I am not a dev but i am a timetable writer. There is a hell of a lot of work just writing a timetable as well as the sims and once the timetable is done that too has to be tested. Please be patient and it will come - as the saying goes WHEN IT'S READY

Having just ventured into timetable writing, the amount of information gathering & research, writing and of course testing of a timetable takes a vast amount of time in itself. And this was for Brighton which may have a lot of trains but is far less complex in regards to the amount of junctions differing routes and freight etc. I lost count of the number of hours spent producing it and times I thought I was done only for something to crop up. The Devs do an amazing job and I hope that the few (very) negative and unjustified comments by a few don't cause any of the Devs to throw in the towel. You are all appreciated and what you produce whenever it is ready is always fantastic. I take off my hat to you all. For those that grumble, why don't you try writing a timetable. I thoroughly enjoyed the two London Meets (July 2011 and March 2012) that I have attended. It was great to finally meet all these people and put some faces to names, as well as enjoying some top quality SimSig. I'm sure I'll enjoy them even more when I reach 18! It was an enjoyable day. There was a good crowd there and we had a good enjoyable social time and chat. A few people played sims, but the majority of us just enjoyed a good day in the pub chatting. I don't even think we took any photos were taken, or if there were, then it's just basically 20 of us sat in a group drinking and chatting.
