Hi, anyone familiar with Minecraft game and in particular the server set-up. My son is into this and we've been trying to set it up watching hours of You-tube videos and there are some points that are still unclear to me.
So if anyone has sucessfully set up as a server and had friends join them then can we have a chat?

You just need to open up port 25565 to run the server.

That and forward it, same as SimSig, depends what else you want, mods, bukkit, tekkit, lots to look into!

I May be new, but I also run a couple.

Worth going straight into bukkit. Its wiki has a simple enough setup instructions.

Have not tried the Bukkit thing but if I explain where I have got to then maybe we can see where to go next.

Have downloaded the server software and run it. Port has been forwarded and checked as open, checked IP is static.

Following various instructions we have added my Son's user name to the White list and to the ops list.
Looked at the server properties and amended the level-name to the file name.
What is not clear is what, if anything, we need to add to the server-ip, depending on the reference source it is the external IP, the router internal IP or leave it blank. Tried each!

Assuming we have got that right then the bit that is not clear is how to "test" the connection.

Have referenced this video - ignore the first 4 minutes - that's not relevant to the matter. The person adds their IP to the server-ip and then when they go to the multiplayer list the server is active and they can connect.

We on the otherhand get "can't reach server"- it's the same whatever IP we use and insert to the file.


We are working on the assumption this is important, as it's not clear how we otherwise open ourselves up to being connected to by others- which is the ultimate objective.

If you're on the same local network, then the 192.168... whatever IP is what you use, externally you'll use your external IP.

Looking at that you may well either not have the server running (can the server machine connect on 127.0.0.1?), or have a firewall running that's blocking the connection.

I've tested it with SimSig and Port 25565 OK
And took the firewall down just to see.

So you can host SimSig on that port but not Minecraft?

What OS are you using, and which Minecraft version / download , any logs or screenshots from the dedicated server window?

Well there's a thing, just powered up his computer, checked the server log, deleted the content to give me a fresh start ran the server powered up Minecraft and it was working! Quite what that's all about I guess we'll never know!

That's with the internal IP I'll tentatively try the external next - hopefully it'll work too and we can have one happy son.

Assuming it's working internally, port forwarding should get it working from the outside world too!

Bukkit (http://bukkit.org/) is a customisable Minecraft server, lots of modifications are available and quite a lot of fun can be had!

Also available is the Tekkit pack (http://www.technicpack.net/tekkit/), a few of us SimSIg players have spent many hours building stuff on that!

Thanks, I'll have a look at them tomorrow- at the moment it will not bind to the external IP and it seems tempremental on the internal one. By the time I get this fixed he'll have moved onto something else I guess.

Unless you're running it on a direct connection, you'll need to bind it to the internal one and use a router to forward the port from the external.

www.portforward.com might have more assistance.

Yes I found another video this morning while eating my Cheerios that seemed to explain that I'd been living under a misaprehension over what IP goes where. Where the difficulty appears to lie is that my conenction seems to drop in and out at random leading me to conclusions that were not correct.

Another evening of fighting computers tonight I fear......

P.S I'll maybe post the link to that video elsewhere as in the first section it explains the whole issue of Port Forwarding and how to do it very well and I know that for SimSig users that's a regular question.

Ha - William found the answer by accident - you need to keep the server program running in the background - obvious I guess with hindsight, but I don't recall seeing that mentioned in anything I've read or viewed on the matter!

It's like SimSig - if you close the server, you close the session!
