Has an one else had experience of Firefox crashing recently? I've had the odd crash starting a week or so ago but it's becoming more regular and this afternoon it was a constant irritation. It appears some sites are more likely that others to cause a crash but it's not necessarily a constant. I'm still using 3.6.28 (tried 4 a while back and did not like it and I've heard that later versions are rubbish) but searching the net it appears that people are having problems with a variety of versions. I'm not sure I necessarily follow what some of the posters are saying and what some of the suggestions entail as I'm not that computer literate. Peter I identify as half man half biscuit - crumbs! I would hazard a guess at a dodgy plug-in. Try disabling them all to see if that helps.

I'd look at upgrading to Firefox 13, 3.6 has had support ended since the end of April. That or perhaps try Chrome or Opera. Log in to reply |

Later versions have had them stripped out at no obvious benefit (to me at least). 3.6 has one flaw, however: it eats up a LOT of processing power when using flash utilities and was frequently on the verge of crashing every time I used them. By a matter of elimination it appears that disabling Shockwave Flash fixes the problem- apparently it needs updated and I'm linked to V10.something though I have v11.something alredy. Oh well don't know what it does anyway so disabled. Also seem to have a load of plug-ins for realplayer but as I don't have that I've tried to remove..... have followed some instructions I found but the were not listed on the report page. I had the same problem with Firefox 13.0.0. I had no trouble at all until the latest version of adobe flash installed itself .. then everything went wrong. could not use U.tube as videos just kept locking up as did various other sites with any kind of animation. Mozilla then released version 13.0.1 which apparently solved the problems, however it did not work as the same things kept happening. I was a huge advocate of FF but it has just lost its way of late with just too many problems. I've switched to Chrome now and find the same pages just load a lot faster. No more FF for me for a while I think. Log in to reply |

I DON'T run chrome due to my opinion that while appear to be fast and snazzy it has some important issues pending. Some of these are a no-no for me. I solved the "flash crash" issue by updating the flash player (it had been updated only a few days ago). To do this from mozilla, go to Tools/Complements then click on the "check plugins are updated" option. This *should* open a new tab listing all your plugins and their status (if checkable). I update by clicking the Shockwave Flash Update button. IMPORTANT: I'm using firefox in Spanish so in translation some of the "text" may not be fully accurate. Right am content with v13.0.1 One thing though, in the favourites list you sometimes have a little icon for the site - where does that come from and what generates as in some cases they have gone or have changed. Peter I identify as half man half biscuit - crumbs! Log in to reply |

It's called a favicon, and it's not something the user can control - it's provided (or not) by the site. I never saw one for Simsig before, but with the temporary 'Biz Global' layout I've now got a little orange dot.

Favicons are miniature images which *normally* located at the root of the website with the name "favicon.ico". Current compatibility allows other types other than .ico and also by using the following html code to have the icon elsewhere: <link rel="shortcut icon" href="http://mysite/somefolder/thefile.ext"> The ext being .ico, .gif, .jpg, .png (and some others). Icons *must* be square (16x16, 32x32, 48x48, 64x64). Most browsers will start using the favicon on tabs when the site (or some page therein) has been bookmarked. The favicon code for the current forum page is: link href="/templates/bizglobal/favicon.ico" rel="shortcut icon" type="image/vnd.microsoft.icon" / NOTE: I've remove the opening and closing angled braces so the page won't try and interpret my post as code. This is near the top of the php generated html code (5th or 6th line). This means that *maybe* changing the current favicon is simply just achieved by replacing the file in the /templates/bizglobal/ folder. Another option may be available by editing the template so that the php generator pours out html with a different location for the file. <EDIT> Confirmed the location. Try accessing http://www.SimSig.co.uk/templates/bizglobal/favicon.ico and you should get the orange circle. It may be that the templates or bizglobal folders are actually symbolic links (and not true subfolders). This would allow their content to be elsewhere on the server (or even off server). However I doubt that the Joomla templates are that convoluted (it would be hell to install and maintain :evil: ). Probably just a case of permissions. Log in to reply |
