I have a very small, minor request to make. Take a look at this; :D:cool::B::lol::/:rolleyes::mad::P;):O:o:=D:(=(:|:)=) Some of these are repeated with exactly the same smiley but different text thingie. These are as follows; and :=D for the 'Really Happy' smiley. If the smilies available could be changed I would like to request removal of each of the repeated ones. Particularly you could remove the following; :=D however I am not sure which of the two 'Cool' smilies and which of the two 'Shocking' smilies could be removed. Perhaps this little thing need discussing or even voting on. I welcome peoples opinions on this. Thanks for reading. Any views and / or opinions expressed by myself are from me personally and do not represent those of any company I either work for or am a consultant for. Log in to reply |

Tallington said:You obviously have toooo much time on your hands ;)Don't think that's particularly appropriate given the amount of time that's been devoted to other aspects of the forum presentation. Peter I identify as half man half biscuit - crumbs! Log in to reply |

Have to agree with Ken here: there are far more useful things I can do (including the reply to this, but oh well). Sorry.

Let me see if I understand correctly. UKTrainMan, is it your concern that there more smileys than necessary and that some are duplicated? If so, the easiest way to solve this is "don't use them" or "ignore them". Regards, Nicholas Log in to reply |

I said I'd done it, as in deleted the duplicates; it took a few seconds. Also found that I can add others. Peter I identify as half man half biscuit - crumbs! Log in to reply |

Thanks Peter - I hadn't realised you could do editing of source on the website. UKTrainMan: My remarks were hopefully to lesten the burden on Geoff with the extra 'constructive' work in replacing the other icons Nicholas and I have been working on in the 'one wish' thread - rather than 'perhaps' destructive effort removing duplicates that may/may not be used. Peter: The fact that you can upload new ones is good but I did think there were far more important efforts going on that needed peoples time behind the scenes and hoped that my message reflected that. The other important thing about 'deletes' is that they act retrospectively and can destroy the context of previous messages - see both UKTrainMan's first one and my reply! The better way - in this instance -would just be to remove those from the 'website page display' element of the code rather than the 'message display' code. Otherwise users who regularly have used those character combinations for their smilies will no longer see them. More important (I think) IS getting the Shout Inputbox sorted out. And - if you could - just put a generic message under the 'Meeting Up' topic heading rather than the current one still saying Derby, or something like - 'See March 2010 meet - location thread to vote', thanks. On the Topic icons and top banner issue , I do understand there may be bandwidth usage problems at the moment which is why there is no rush. Ken Log in to reply |

I don't disagree that there various aspects of the forum display maybe more important than others but I don't see that being dismissive and patronising to someone that points out what they perceive as an anomaly is helpful. Peter I identify as half man half biscuit - crumbs! Log in to reply |

Peter and UKTrainMan, I apologise if it was thought I was being dismissive and patronising over this but my initial post was intended to be fairly light hearted (and on track) and the use of smilies tried to convey that. NOT that the 'perceived' problem didn't exist, but it is down to us users to just choose the emoticon we wish to use OR have used previously. An anomaly is one thing, the way that it is dealt with is another. The amount of work needed to get a lasting result needs to justify the effort. This particular item (I think) needed more than the quick response given, which is why I have pointed out the unfortunate consequences in my previous post. Ken Log in to reply |
