If I host an Edinburgh session running the paid version, will people with the free version be able to connect, or would we all need to have the same version? Similarly will the paid version work in client mode to a free version host?

I'm not sure if, as a matter of course, version numbers are checked against each other when attempting chaining. However, as a matter of fact there is different functionality between these specific versions which will at best cause some mismatch. Exactly what will happen I don't know as I've not tried it. Also I don't know what will happen if you try and chain old Edinburgh with new NEscot (for example), save that the chaining code within the core-code was overhauled requiring some rewriting of some (but not all) of the links.

So all I can say is try it and see but don't expect it to work.

I didn't particularly mean chaining - I was thinking more of a standard host/client set-up on the one sim.

Sorry, the first bit I meant multiplay (linking) not chaining: chaining is the "also" bit.

I think I will have to play with it and see what works, and what doesn't.
