A Victorian steam locomotive which starred as ‘The Green Dragon’ in the famous 1970 film ‘The Railway Children’ is to make its last appearance on 20th January before undergoing a major overhaul.Built in 1887 by Beyer Peacock in Manchester, Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway No. 957 is well remembered from the classic 1970 film ‘The Railway Children’ where it starred as ‘The Green Dragon’, which sets off a landslide. The locomotive will be joined on the day by Lancashire & Yorkshire locomotive No. 1300, a very similar locomotive which is currently on loan to the Railway, providing the rare spectacle of TWO historic L&Y liveried locomotives working together on a passenger train. Also making its last appearance before overhaul will be British Railways Ivatt tank No. 41241. Built at Crewe in 1949, this locomotive is famous for hauling the line’s re-opening train back in 1968 and is one of a class which was used extensively on branch lines such as the Worth Valley.
