Ive recently returned to the world of desktop PCs after years of laptops, and I have no idea how port forwarding works on a wired connection, or if it is neccesary. I have a Sky router which is connected to my Tower via an ethernet cable. do i still need to port forward as normal (in which case i can deal with that) or do i not need to bother, or is there a third option? Depends upon how your router set up and whether or not you have a software firewall running on your PC. If the router handles all firewall responsibilities, then all you'll need to do is set the forwarding rule up on there as normal and you'll be good to go. If the firewall software on your PC stops you connecting, then you'd have to configure it to allow traffic on the required port to go through also. The way you connect from router to computer should not affect the way apps like Simsig that need specific ports opening on a firewall behave when interacting with the internet.

If you had a wired connection from your computer directly into the phone line, you wouldn't need to do it as the external IP address would be that of your computer. But because you're using a router - no matter how your computer is connected to it, wired or wireless - your external IP address belongs to the router, so you need to forward a port so it knows which computer to send Simsig traffic to.

I have the same set up as you and I just set up Port Forwarding as normal following the instructions via a forum link.

JC, Your method of connection isn't likely to make any difference at all and whatever you had to do before, you will probably will need to do again. Now you mention a router. If your laptop's used it to access the internet before and you now connect your desktop to it instead then the above is definitely true. If your router has, and is using, bridge mode though, that's a different matter. If it is, your external IP address is given directly to your PC. It's easy to tell if that's the case by looking at your PC's IP address. If your PC's IP address starts with 192.168.x.x, or a 10.x.x.x (there another group of addresses that starts with 172 but I've never seen a router that uses that group as a default), then these are local addresses and your router is using NAT and it's NOT bridged. If it is bridged, then no, you won't need port forwarding on the router. Be aware though, that in this mode your PC is essentially directly on the internet so firewall protection on your PC is not only advisable but probably a must and if you have a firewall, it will need to have forwarding rules to pass the client data through it.
