I can't seem to be able to clear GL16 as a train is approaching Glyndyrfdwy from Carrog.




Here you can see 1L07 approaching the station (the headcode is abeam GL16). I set a route from GL16 to GL15 (the overlap extending to GL14) but GL16 does not clear. I think this is probably because GL15 needs to be cleared by lowering the LC barriers, so I do this and click GL15, which clears. However, when I try setting the route GL16-GL15, GL16 remains red.

Even more surprisingly, when IL07 actually arrives, it is not stopped by GL16 (red) but goes right through, whereupon GL16 changes to green, by itself.

Has my inability to set the route GL16-GL15 anything to do with the fact that the points at the end of the loop are sprung catch points, as marked by the "$" sign?

This simulates the real life situation. Signal 16 is approach controlled and will only come off once the berth track circuit is occupied by an approaching train. The approach control is in place to all a train to be admitted when the level crossing (in real life gates) is still open to road traffic.

The signal is a motor operated lower quadrant semaphore signal and this is linked to the train operated points as it will only come Off if the points are detected 'Normal' and it will return to the 'On' position if the detection fails.

Signal 3 is similar but not approach controlled.

Could you attach a saved game? I've just tested this with another train, and can't find anything amiss. GL16 is approach released from red, and the signal clears shortly after the train enters the track circuit between GL16 and the distant signal.

Thanks Andrew G and Steamer. Yes, approach control (approach locking) explains it fully. I forgot about this (must have been away too long). Good article by Clive Feather on this here.

Approach locking and approach control are two very different things.

Approach control is what is shown in the example here, approach locking is what causes a route to time out if the signal is replaced to danger in front of a train.
