No, some of the SR units definitely got it (the ones that work to Hastings for certain & could've been others). Not sure about anything else. I have an idea it was being applied as units went through works and those just happened to be the fleets which were being overhauled at the time (there may have been asbestos removal involved and it may even have been that which dictated the timing). My recollection probably dated from when I used to go trainspotting with a friend, frequenting Southend Victoria particularly where there was a friendly driver who let us clamber over the new 321s being introduced. Having spoken to a man in my office in the know, 5 units of class 411 (4 CEP) failed to go into Jaffa Cake livery (or as my late father refered to it 'Tomato Sandwich' livery) which were units 1560 - 1563 / 1607 / 1608 along with the entire 4 BEP fleet, there were also 4 or 5 of the refurb series 1 4 Cig's in Jaffa for a very short period of time (1701 - 1704/5). 1560 - 1563 were loaned to the South West division to cover for the units lost in the Clapham accident 1607 was the first 4 CEP unit in NSE and 1608 was the last in Blue and Grey. Also you had two spare CEP motor coaches which remained in the old livery until scrapping. Paul You have to get a red before you can get any other colour Log in to reply |

To add another one and move away from the is GatEx a TOC argument, I have heard of Eurotunnels rescue locos being nicknamed Jelly-molds due to their resemblance to them.

When I worked at Portsmouth Harbour Station (2010-2014) we called the 313s 'Milk Floats', the 444s 'Doodlebugs' and the 450s 'UFOs'. Not sure if there were nicknames for the other rolling stock types (159s and 377s).

Cl.700 units are known as Storm Troopers in Bedford. Doodlebugs were originally naicknamed to Cl.60 locos when they entered service in 1990.

Greater Anglia's Class 755/4's have picked up the nicknames of "Basils" because they are so Faulty or "Lemons" because they are/were using Citrus Oil to clear contamination from the wheels
