New Yard query 22/01/2014 at 14:32 #54113

Afternoon all,

Decided to have a day off from work so doing more on my Whiteball Blockade TT based on the data for 20-Jan-2014. Just a couple of questions regarding Exeter New Yard though.

The situation is that one train, numbered 5A72, is starting from New Yard. There is also one train that works dead from Paignton to Exeter New Yard in the evening: this spends the night at ENY for 5A72 the next day. Both are HSTs. So:

I presume I can not get an SWT Class 159 and an FGW HST into the same Exeter New Yard line so the HST presumably uses the headshunt (signal E642). For the morning trains I have managed to get 5L20 to seed at E642 and 5A72 to seed at E646 as a test although, to make things work and the trains run without obstruction in Exeter NY, 5L20 should seed at E646 and 5A72 at E642. But the questions are these:

1. How long is the headshunt at Exeter NY? The FGW HST (for 5A72) should technically go in there but will the lengths be OK? I ask this as there is nothing I can find in the Exeter manual that gives the length for that headshunt even though it looks quite long to me when I pass it on a train.

2. If the headshunt is long enough then, for the evening train (5Z79, 1918 Paignton - Exeter NY) how can I get this train into the headshunt, thereby clearing the way for other dead workings connected with Exeter - Waterloo trains?

Hope you can understand me here and I haven't filled your brains with confusing bilge. :)

Thanks for any help,
Dave

Exeter New Yard in sim doesn't quite reflect reality - I gather that Peter intends to do a rebuild of Exeter in the future to improve aspects of the sim's realism in areas, but I have no knowledge as to what extents that is or any timeframes for it. AFAIK he's working on other projects at the minute.

In reality, the track layout at New Yard is slightly different:

E646/648 on the sim are E666/668 on the ground in real life. There are no signals at the Cowley Bridge End, access to the Shunt spur and 3rd siding is controlled by Handpoints.

Lengths of the sidings are shown in red, the Shunt Spur is 575m from the hand points to the Buffer Stops, although if memory serves me correctly there is a Posession Limit Board placed part of the way down the siding. As a result I'm not sure what the useable length is, perhaps someone more local can put you (and me!) straight on that one. I imagine long enough though for a 9 car class 159.

So, to answer your specifics. Between 641/646 and 645/648 you should be able to fit a full GW 2+8 HST and a 3 car 159 on top. Whether the sim is quite long enough I don't have access to the data for. 1 HST in the spur, and one on one of the 'normal' roads would seem reasonable, leaving one road (usually the one closest to the Mainline) free for SWT trains. There doesn't however appear to be timetable location for this so I'm not sure how you'd TT it.

Hope that's of some help

Thanks James. That is a great help. As for the HST in the spur, the only TT location is a reversing point so the train at the headshunt rings up asking to be allowed to move.

Next problem is that I can't seed two trains in the same place AFAIK so I may put 5A72 elsewhere as 5L20 has to come out first! May require some tweaking: will see what happens.

I'm presuming you want to seed a couple of trains which work forward later in the sim (I assume you don't want to seed 2 trains moving in the same section at the same time!). You need to seed a dummy ECS working which splits at the seed point. Have a look at the Marylebone TT to see how it happens.

Hi Postal,

Thanks for the tip. The split would be rather difficult: 5A72 would be an FGW HST but 5L20 would be an SWT Class 159! I am wondering if the best thing to do is to revise 5L20 to start from EXD, Platform 2 and then reverse somewhere so that it ends up in Platform 1. Will look into it.

As it's only a seed (ie 'artificial'), you needn't worry about the accuracy, after all, it's a hand of god putting the train(s) there anyway.

I can only help one person a day. Today's not your day. Tomorrow doesn't look too good either.

Thanks for the replies.

I have revised 5L20 to seed at signal E537 (Exeter St. Davids, Platform 2) to the following schedule:

Exeter St. Davids, Platform 2: dep. 0413
Rev Exeter SD North (Signal 644): arr. 0415,, dep. 0418
Exeter St. Davids, Platform 1: arr. 0420

Hi Dave

I have been doing an Exeter 2013 timetable with the trains seeding in New Yard. There is the HST normally 5A73 but currently 5A72 and 2 class 159's 5L20 and 5L28. What I did was to seed the HST at S646 , 5L20 at S648 and 5L28 at the headshunt - S642. When 5L28 rings up I just drop it on the back of 5L20. This should be enough to get you going, unless I've missed something. Nothing else should need to use New Yard until the HST departs at 04:10 to free up a track. The other track will be occupied until 07:21 when 5L28 departs.

In previous timetables where trains could not seed I just started these trains in Riverside Yard - job done!

Thanks also to JamesN for the diagram of New Yard. Very helpful.
