I visited Motherwell last month. I am surprised to see how much its changed over the last 20 years.

Surprised to see that the Cove/ Kirkpatrick area used to be on the main panel area. As you can see in the picture below its now on an additional panel. I thought it was controlled by a gate box until verily recently.

Also its nice to see the Newton area before its simplification and original Mossend (panel 3) before the new SSI panel went in.

Now most of the Motherwell area has now been replaced by SSI. With only a few Relay interlocked areas left.

Also,

I thought that Gartsherrie was part of the original early 1970's scheme but it would turn out it was not. When was this put in? After 1991 at a guess...

Phil Deaves' site gives the closing date of Gartsherrie South Jn as 1st May 1999, the same time as the rest of the boxes on the Cumbernauld line went to Cowlairs.

And the British Power Signalling Register lists the commissioning date of Motherwell SC (Cove Crossing Panel) as 17th December 2003.
Two million people attempt to use Birmingham's magnificent rail network every year, with just over a million of them managing to get further than Smethwick.
