I see with the latest release of the loader that when you save a game it suggests a file name e.g. 151227-080625simtime100712.ssg. I find this very helpful as it is a unique file name which I won't accidentally overwrite the next time I save a game. My question is, could this feature be extended to snapshots? I tend to have the sim set to save shapshots every 10 mins, e.g. SnapshotAt0710.ssg. The problem is, if I have a second attempt at the sim, at 0710 sim time it will overwrite my previous SnapshotAt0710.ssg file. If Simsig saved the snapshots with the same naming convention as it now does with manual saves, this wouldn't happpen. Just a thought. Log in to reply |

The problem with snapshots is that they can build up very quickly. If you have them set to 10 minutes and the sim is a 24 or 25 hour one, that's around 150 snapshots. Therefore I made an explicit decision that they would be overwritten by new ones rather than kept; I didn't want complaints that someone's disc had filled up with hundreds of snapshots they'll never need again or that it's hard to find the right one among the resulting huge folders.

I see what you mean. Not being too bothered about file size, I'll do what seems to me the next best thing, which is to set the sim to take snapshots every 11 minutes on the second run-through. That means that only one in ten of the snapshots from the first run-through will be overwritten.

Also am I right in thinking that Snapshots are done per simulation rather than for SimSig simulations as a whole? James Log in to reply |

what I tend to do is if I have a big set of snapshots from testing eg a WTT or sim and I may have a need to refer back to them, is to dump them all into a sub-folder within that simulation (compression is available too).
I can only help one person a day. Today's not your day. Tomorrow doesn't look too good either. Log in to reply |

When a full 24-hour run of a sim set to save every 10 minutes takes no more space on the HDD than maybe half a dozen pictures downloaded from a camera it does seem a little restrictive not to allow users to have the choice about how to save their snapshots.
