Hi All

I'm pleased to advise you all, that this timetable is now uploaded and ready for release. Download Link is here: Bristol SX2015

We had expected to be able to release this timetable before the end of last year, but due to real life pressures our free time for the project was limited and the discovery of a few issues meant we had to carry out some additional editing and another full test.

Description of this timetable

This is a 2015, standard weekday timetable for the Bristol Panel area. This timetable is fully compatible, and able to be chained with Westbury (already released), Gloucester (when released) and Swindid (when released). The Passenger workings have been taken from the Working Timetable of December 2014, with First Great Western stock allocations based on unit diagrams. These are a snapshot of one day however, and are only intended to represent what actually happened on that one day, so these may not be entirely representative of daily operations. South West Trains stock allocations are based off the Carriage Working Notice. Freight services have been derived from June 2015. The timetable has been tested to ensure the Passenger and Freight workings do not conflict.

Two start times are provided, 00:00 and 04:30. On the 00:00 start, 632 services are in this timetable. This is broadly in line on previous timetables, although there have been a few service changes in that time. You will need to pay close attention to all timetables, in particular, the Freight services especially if they are running early. Various parts of Bristol Panel will often jam up with trains, so you will need to think ahead!

As usual, if any errors or issues are found, please add comments to this thread, and we will address them.

Passenger Services
First Great Western (FGW)
First Great Western (now GWR) operate almost all services through this area. The service pattern is mixed, with the Long Distance services from the Far West to London, and commuter services centred on Bristol itself. Many of these trains split, join or shunt at Bristol. Whilst there is a basic pattern of services, there are variations or additions to this on most hours. This is marked on the train description. The basic pattern is:

  • 2tph London Paddington - Bristol Temple Meads. Some of these extend to Weston-Super-Mare and Taunton during Peak, and several extend to Plymouth and Paignton during the Off Peak.

  • 2tph London Paddington - Cardiff Central, 1tph of which extends to Swansea

  • 1tph Cardiff Central - Portsmouth Harbour.

  • 1tph Cardiff Central - Taunton.

  • 1tph Gloucester - Westbury. Most services extend past Gloucester to destinations including Cheltenham Spa, Worcester and Great Malvern, and from Westbury to Warminster, Salisbury, Southampton, Frome and Weymouth (via Yeovil Pen Mill)

  • 1tph Bristol Parkway - Weston-Super-Mare

  • 3tp2h Bristol Temple Meads - Avonmouth, of which 1tp2h extends to Severn Beach.

Some stopping services are extended past Taunton into the far South West.

Units used are 150, 153 and 158 in a variety of combinations, and HST sets..

South West Trains (SWT)
South West Trains operate a limited service between Bristol Temple Meads and London Waterloo, all of which join/divide services from/to Exeter at Salisbury, and all are formed of Class 159 units.

Cross Country (XC)
Cross Country operate regular North East - South West services through this area. Generally in the South West they terminate at Plymouth, with a few early morning and late evening extensions to Penzance. These commence at a variety of places in the North East and Scotland. These services are further supplemented by periodic services from Manchester to Paignton, which are in turn an extension of the hourly service normally terminating in Bristol. The basic pattern is:

    [li]1tph Newcastle / Leeds / Edinburgh / Glasgow / Aberdeen - Plymouth / Penzance
  • 1tph Manchester Piccadilly - Bristol Temple Meads (some extensions to Paignton).

These services are formed by Class 220 and 221 Multiple Units, along with four HST's on the busiest services.

The above descriptions are based on daytime services. Late evening trains in particular may not conform to the patterns.

Freight
A variety of traffic - and perhaps more numerous freights than you would see in real life - but all schedules are real. Freight Operating Companies running services are DB Schenker (DBS), Freightliner (FL), Direct Rail Services (DRS), GB Railfreight (GBRf) and Colas Rail. The largest flow is normally coal, followed by intermodal. Fuel oil, automotive and Enterprise trips can also be seen, along with more unusual workings such as logs and nuclear flasks. As always, the Avonmouth BHT South inner roads bug persists, so to ensure the Coal Trains run correctly, they have been timetabled to 'load' in the Loco Release Road. It's also worth pointing out that the locomotive run-arounds at Avonmouth throw up timetable errors, but they do run without any problems.

Other notes

You must read the timetable carefully, as trains will often not take the route you expect, or hold for another train to run ahead of it. This is particularly important for freight services, especially if they are ahead of time. Temple Meads and its approaches will often jam up with trains - especially if you have delays/failures on - so you need to be prepared to re-platform trains if things turn a bit pear shaped.

We hope you find this timetable challenging, but enjoyable.

Andrew James (kaiwhara) and Tim Squires (Temple Meads).

Sorry guys, I am in the business of making people wait!

It's not an update. it's a new timetable. You need to go to the Downloads link from the main site and bring down the new timetable from there.
