Edgware Road features the oldest mechanical frame on the London Underground. The 39-lever 'K style' frame has been in operation since 1926.

Its worth noting that track circuits in some of the Signal Cabins (Signal Boxes) when occupied the lights in the diagram will extinguish and light up again indicating that the track circuit is clear. This also has the added advantage of lamp failures being more obvious.

In the diagram I have included the train describer which is featured in the Box. The train descriptions indicate the train currently on which platform and the next train entering from the adjacent areas. Although it may look complicated its rather easy to understand.

The line from Paddington Suburban to Hammersmith is controlled by automatic signalling which is not indicated in any other signal cabins. The first indication of a train at Hammersmith cabin is when the train arrives at Goldhawk Road. (The penultimate station to Hammersmith)

Likewise, the line from Paddington Circle to High Street Kensington is also controlled by automatic signalling so like the line to Hammersmith this is not indicated to the next box (Earls Court) until the train approaches High Street Kensington.

Train descriptions from High Street Kensington are transmitted when the train arrives at High Street Kensington and trains from Hammersmith descriptions appear when the train arrives at Paddington. However I know Hammersmith does not set up train descriptions so I am unable to work out if these are done manually or not.

Each train turning back/ terminating at Edgware Road will require a train description. This can be done before the train arrives and this will make the train information displays appear with the trains destination so the passengers know which train to catch. I have not added this feature into the mock up.

SimSig descriptions as per Network Rail Train describers are Number, Letter, Number, Number format (0X00). I was wondering if descriptions that are sent could appear on the train describers as 2-3 letter formats such as HM for Hammersmith, S for Special, PG for Parson Green etc. Trains would also need to be identified as the train number and trip as well. Proficient use of the simplifier would also be needed to correctly route trains.

Many happy memories of working that cabin - I was an apprentice for 2 years there, followed a few years later by being resident signalman for 4 years. In between those times I was resident signalman at Hammersmith cabin.
The timetable at present would be very monotonous, with the same pattern of moves repeating every 10 minutes. Busy, yes. Very tedious after a few hours, yes.
The smallness of the Edgware Road area would probably suit some sort of "lever-based" sim, as that would create more activity.
If the whole branch from and including Hammersmith was added, this would lessen the repetitiveness slightly.

The train descriptions from High Street Kensington are transmitted as trains depart there, and the track circuit beyond the starter is occupied. No train descriptions are sent from Hammersmith cabin direct to Edgware Road, although platforms along the branch do get information by way of a mixture of different systems. The description at Paddington Suburban is set by Edgware Road cabin.

Stupid question, is that box still open? I always thought Papatoetoe in New Zealand was the last Westinghouse K Frame in action in the world. Looks like I might not be correct...
Sorry guys, I am in the business of making people wait!

Not a stupid question - most think the tube is run solely by computers these days, and with modern rolling stock recently introduced on the line, anyone would be forgiven for thinking the line would have been modernised at the same time.
The box is very much still open and without it there wouldn't be a Circle Line. It has been destined for closure a number of times under various re-signalling schemes. The latest plans "should" mean it will close within the next 3-4 years.
