Just in the final testing of a new timetable for Stafford but noted that on the Upload page timetables are requested in Winzip. Not having Winzip but using other 'free' compression software e.g. ZipItFree/7fm would it be OK to use those or MUST it be Winzip?

As far as I can tell, I think it should be ok, because anyone using winzip, or any other tools to uncompress the zip file, will be able to. (after all the zip file produced are almost the same, if not exactly the same). However, as I am not a person who can state a rule here, you have to wait for an answer from someone who can, to have a definitive official answer. Log in to reply |

Both 7-Zip and ZipItFree support .ZIP format files and should therefore be fine in that format. Don't know about/can't find 7fm. Basically, if the program says that it supports the creation of .ZIP files, then it should be compatible. If you're running Windows XP/Vista/7 (and, possibly, 2000 Pro), the support is also built-in to the OS. Nick Log in to reply |

Running Vista I find Winzip V.7 but it says incompatible with Vista (?) so must run V.11.1 but that shortcut says the win.exe has been moved and is no longer available. I don't remember moving anything and I can't find it in the Program files. I was wondering whether it was a time restricted thing launched with the product. Ah well no worries will use an alternative as suggested above. :: Log in to reply |

You don't need WinZip in Vista - select the files you want to zip up, right-click and Send To>Compressed (zipped) Folder. This will put the files into a new, zipped folder which you can then upload/email/etc.

It's a bit of a hangover from the old forum where there were problems with some ziping types. The preference is for WinZip as that gives a 'universal' standard to download. However, whatever you use will be fine provided WinZip will open it- that, I think, is the critical point. Can't promise that the forum will accept others but try it and see. If I remember correctly the problem was with some files uploaded in a completely different archive format (such as rar for example). (people then was not able to decompress them without having a program which was able to handle this specific format).

There are different types of compressed archives. It depends on what you are archiving, but here is a list of some of the formats that work on Windows: .zip (Created with either WinZip or the built in compressor (Right click > Send To > Compressed (zipped) folder)). .rar (Created using WinRar, can be unrared with WinZip, 7z, IZArc, PeaZip, Zipeg & ALZip) .7z (Created with 7-zip and extracted with 7-zip. Compression rate higher than .zip) I prefer to use 7z for it's high compression rate, but .zip is easier to work with. You just have to find your own slot I suppose.
