Shame I didn't log on sooner this evening as I recognised it straight away. That brings back memories - I remember in the pre-leccy days at Hitchin and seeing the Deltics thunder through with a rake of mark 2's in tow. You could often hear the distinctive rumble before you could see them. How things have changed....... The brick building on the second photo is still there though..... Now there's some memories! Brick building in the 2nd photo is the relay room for the new signalling. Looking at the track layout in that photo, 2 elements of the ladder that would eventually form the junction to the Down Cambridge are in place. I can't see if the 3rd (Up Fast to Down Cambridge) is there but I suspect not. So access to the Down Cambridge is still from teh Down Slow, signalled by the 3rd doll from the left on the big bracket facing the camera. The leftmost doll once signalled trains to the Midland line to Bedford but by this time it only read into a siding. Meanwhile, on the bracket with its back to the camera, we can see the only distant remaining is Hitchin South's fast line distant; that for up fast to up slow has gone, as has the up slow distant! (In later years there was an up slow distant partway along the platform, so I wonder if they were relying on that - probably less than 200 yards in rear of the home!?) In the 1st photo the brickwork left of photo is Hitchin Yard box, with the bracket post carrying its down homes in front (there were also inner distants for the Cambridge Junction homes, the bracket visible above the LH Cravens unit). If this was taken on the same day, it confirms the final leg of the ladder to the Down Cambridge hadn't been laid. Incidentally, Hitchin Yard had a bell hung outside the south end window, presumably for ringing when a stopping train was approaching (though I never knew it used). You can see how close the boxes were. Apparently it was normal for all three boxes to book Train Entering Section and Train Out of Section for a fast within the same minute! Thanks for posting these.
