Loader Crashes While Running Wolverhampton Sim 18/04/2019 at 11:23 #117680

Running Wolverhampton sim version 1.5, Loader version 4.11 and Groundhog Day 0445 timetable, all was fine until 0657 when the sim froze, greyed out, and a message box appeared stating "Simsig loader has stopped working". I closed and reopened the sim from the most previous save, with all the same windows open as before (Messages, F4, F2, Show Timetable and F7) and the loader crashed again at 0657. I closed and reopened the sim, but without the F2 window and this appeared to cure the problem. As a belt and braces I made saves every 5 - 10 mins and all was ok until approx 0727 when the loader crashed again. I reopened the sim with all windows except F2 as before and all worked well until shortly after 0752 (the last game save) when the loader crashed again.

I've ever experienced a loader issues of any kind while running any other sim, but it has been around 3 years (looking at sim save dates) since I last ran Wolverhampton so has something crept into either the sim or the loader since then that affects just this sim? Just to clarify, this wasn't a restart from an old save as there have been so many loader/sim updates since then, this was a fresh sim started with the current loader and sim version. I've attached the latest save (0752hrs) from just before the last loader crash.

Regards,

Phil.

Update - I just started the sim again from the latest save (0752hrs sim time) and the loader crashed again at 0758.

Update 2 - I made a third restart from 0752, this time with only the message window open that opens on sim startup (wondering if there may be an issue with too many ancillary sim windows open) and the loader crashed again at 07:58:30. At least there doesn't appear to be an issue with other windows in the sim being open.

No I didn't Mark. I wasn't doing anything immediately prior to any of the crashes.

Can this be replicated AFTER you've rebooted your PC?

Yes. I was running Wolverhampton last night when I started having issues. My PC was shut down overnight then rebooted this morning and the problem persists. I haven't tried any other sims yet to verify whether it is just affecting the Wolverhampton sim.

Reference my earlier comment, I've been running Manchester South for over an hour now with no issues.

I've just tried to reproduce this with your saved game and failed. That suggests it's either specific to your machine or it's something you're doing during play.

Can you please try to create a save literally seconds before the crash? Also say exactly which windows I need open when starting from the save. Thanks in advance.

Isn't it typical, when you want it to break it won't. I've just started the sim from 0752 and it's now up to 0805 with no issues. I made a save every minute from 0752 to 0800, could making the saves have changed anything in the background? Since 0800 I've spaced my saves at 5-minute intervals, I'm currently up to 0815 without incident. I'll just have to keep my eye on it and see what happens.

I spoke too soon. Last save made at 0820 (attached), loader stopped working at 0828. The noticeable difference this time is that it crashed as I interacted with the sim. I clicked on 1G08 description in the approach (APPR) berth from Oxley (not 1G08 in the Oxley Train Describer) and it crashed (screenshot attached). The screenshot also shows the in-sim windows I had open at the time (Show Timetable, F7 Incident Report, Messages, F4 Timetable List).

Now, I've just ran the provided save and the sim just completely shut down at 07:58:12.

My last movements were as follows...

Routed 1H17 - signals selected were 62 routed to 254.

I toggled the Autos OFF for signals 25 & 32 at Bushbury Jn to allow 4M52 to eventually come off the Down Grand Junction.
I then attempted to click on 1L71 for a TT enquiry, and 1G12. At this moment, I found nothing was responding and the whole sim just closed.

I didn't get an error message or a "Loader has stopped working" message.

I've ran the sim again for a second time.

The sim again closed when I clicked on 1G12.

Third time.

1G12 again when clicked.

What I have found. When you click on 1G12 on the Oxley TD, once 1G12 is in the berth of the signal after Bilbrook, also the berth after and on the approach berth on Wolverhampton, and TC T341X the sim crashes. IF you wait until 1G12 is occupying TC T344 then the sim does not crash.

Craig

The crash of the sim when clicking on the approch berth at Oxley is a known issue (Mantis 0022534).

I've just tried the same with 1G08 and got the same results.

The issue you have recreated here, clicking on the approch berth from Oxley is known, it is not the original problem you reported. As you stated the original crashes happened when you did not click on the Oxley Approch Berth.

Yes Mark, the unsolicited crashes remain a mystery.

same thing happening to me. just opened wolverhampton for the first time in a few years, started playing the 2015 v1.2 timetable. not crashing but found an issue with 5G49 at OY59 signal. downloaded the new timetable that gets rid of the 5G49 issue, loaded it and started playing and its now crashed twice, once at 11 mins and the second attempt it crashed at 12 mins. save attached from the start of the second attempt.

Strangely enough, until this week it had been three years since I last ran Wolverhampton. Has there been any sim update in that time that may be causing problems? I've not seen anything reported in this forum.

I've found the root cause of the "click on Oxley" case: it's a bug in the sim data that causes infinite recursion in the core code. Bugs have been raised to catch this in future.

Do we have a reproducible case for the other crash report?

I attached a save prior to an unsolicited crash in my original post Clive.

Phil.

I attached a save prior to an unsolicited crash in my original post Clive.
But I can't reproduce that, as I said. I'm looking for a reproducable crash that doesn't involve clicking on the Oxley berth.
