While we try to avoid subjects unrelated to railways and that are emotive, we feel we should at least acknowledge Queen Elizabeth II as the Queen of the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth. Please use this thread for any respectful discussion on the subject.

Many of my friends know that by conviction I'm not a monarchist. That shouldn't prevent us honouring a quite remarkable lifetime of service. The late Queen showed an exemplary devotion to duty. I imagine the burdens of office were never less than onerous, sometimes I suspect overwhelming; I guess there were time when the privileges of her position were scant recompense. Yet she never showed less than complete dedication and clearly continued working to the very end. Any of us would do well to be inspired by her. It might be worth remembering she was a person of great faith. I suspect that might have made yesterday not so much an end to feared or resisted as a completion of what she was called to do. She has amply fulfilled the vows she made at her coronation. Now she is released from them. May she rest in peace and rise in glory. I can recall back in 1969 when I was 7 all the schools in Dundee were bussed up to town and lined the Perth Road to wave our little Union Flags as the Queen drove past. It's the only time I think I've seen any member of the Royal Family "live" as it were. It was all the more memorable to me as at the time my Grandfather was the Chairman of the East of Scotland Water Board and one of the Queen's duties on that visit was to open the new Backwater Reservoir to serve Dundee etc. My mum's got a lovely photo album of the event and pictures of my Gran and Grandad showing her around. For want of something better to do today I did some searching and found this of him chatting to her. Peter  Post has attachments. Log in to view them. I identify as half man half biscuit - crumbs!
