Can again ask for this change to be considered?

https://www.SimSig.co.uk/Forum/ThreadView/53393

Again to emphasise, the only bit that I'm requesting changed is:
- the requirement for the signaller to answer the drivers call before departure IF the signal is already showing a proceed aspect; ie. If the delay is resolved and the signal is showing proceed, the train will depart and NOT ring up.

Even if its an option that can be clicked on or off.

It makes gameplay more realistic and for big Sims like Man Picc, just makes it easier than having to answer a call to tell a driver to proceed, especially when you already clicked the option that you won't be returning the signal to danger.

Signallers are busy generally especially in big Boxes, but a common factor is no one wants an unnecessary phone call.

I believe the discussion in the previous thread from signallers and drivers already addresses the issue in hand, that no change is required.

That’s not entirely true Geoff.

It was thrown out there that everyone does it different ,which isn’t true as No Signaller or Driver wants extra work or phone calls; but no one came back and said that they would call the signalman before moving off if they had a proceed signal.

Certainly no signalman came back and said they would expect a driver to call back before moving off. In my many years of being a Signaller, I’ve never had a driver not leave a station before s/he spoke to me. I’ve had them call me on the move and say, they’ve left, all sorted, but never wait for permission to leave
The only time they would wait if if there was an operational incident and you’ve told them not to move without your say so regardless of aspect change, but that is not the nature of train problems in SimSig.

The only thing said was that on finding the initial problem they would give the signalman all the details of the issue, which is different to what I’m requesting.

I can ask around if you want I know numerous signallers and driver if you need a third opinion. Lol :-D

Again to clarify:-
Call on problem - Yes
Call if further problem (ie. Extra 5-10mins needed) - Yes
Call if signal at danger and ready to depart - Yes
Call if signal showing proceed and ready to depart - No

This last one is the only change.

FWIW I did get 2 calls in one shift Sunday night telling me problems had been resolved before the trains then took the signals that had remained off for them. I wouldn't say it never happens, though it's probably a bit more common in the GSM-R age than it would have been when that would have meant going to an SPT if one was even fitted. Common sense would say that typically a driver might not necessarily feel the need to ring up to say everything's been sorted if the signal was off (particularly if it's an auto signal at a small station on a stretch of plain line) unless they'd been asked to or felt it was necessary to discuss any further arrangements. On the other hand, especially if a possible fault has been reported and the driver is on the phone to maintenance to see what can be done, drivers might rightly feel that they should ring up and confirm that everything is okay and the train will now be proceeding normally after all.

I think it's not true to life that no train will ever depart after a delay has been resolved without speaking to the signaller first, but it does strike me that SimSig ain't really broke and doesn't really need fixing.

At least one signaller and at least one driver in that thread confirmed that phone calls are not unusual in the circumstances in which you insist never happen.

Believe it or not, given my previous professional employment providing simulators to Network Rail and myself travelling to a large number of sites, many of whom I still talk to, I think I have a fairly widespread resource pool from all regions and specialities from which to base my decision. But thanks.

Let's just put this to bed. There are enough dissents in the room that this change is not happening.

And on that note i won't ask for anything any more.

I'm not talking about the odd phone call now and again on a random day, I'm talking about in general.

You literally just said one or two posts, that's not a majority, but you ALL know best obviously, 23years of signalling is no experience as all.

Game posts only now.

No point having an opinion or experience on the forum. Developers are god obviously no one else matters

The issue is that your request is opinion/experienced based rather than based on something factual like a locking table or rulebook requirement. That means different people will have different experiences in different locations and circumstances.

Given the delay system already abstracts delay reasons from a random pile and they don't actually define the length of delay, this seems like a fair abstraction for the driver to make a quick call and square things away.

I recently queried something with Geoff regarding something I felt was wrong, and his response was a fair one that the issue in question had been run past signallers, drivers, controllers etc and everyone had different opinions and experiences, so of course which one do you go with?

There's nothing wrong with raising issues and ideas, I just wouldn't expect someone to agree with you 100% of the time.

Well with over 40 years experience, I can tell you that in the past, if you didn't replace a signal to Danger when a Driver told you they would be delayed, they wouldn't ring up to proceed if the signal was off. Nowadays, I don't know if TOCs instruct their drivers differently or not, but the Four TOCs I deal with, the majority of Drivers will still ring up to say they have rectified their delay issue and ask if they can proceed even though the Signal is at proceed. And that is whether they are at a station or out in the middle of nowhere. In the area I signal, over 58 trains and hour, it is more common for the Driver to ring than not after retifying any delay issues when the signal is at proceed.
