Hi all. I decided today to download/install the Google Chrome web browser. I must start by saying "Wow! I'm very impressed so far" and they certainly ain't wrong when they say it's faster - although I wasn't impressed with the fact that they claimed it would take a few seconds to get me up and running (as in downloaded, installed and ready to go) when in reality it was around 3 minutes Anyway, I have heard one or two bad things about the browser which I am left wondering about. I was wondering if any of my fellow SimSiggers have had any bad experiences with this browser that they could please let me know about. I wouldn't say no to anyone posting up good experiences too. Looking forward to hearing from as many of you as possible. Thanks in advance. Hey there UKTM, I have used a great many browsers on my trusty laptop: Lynx Opera Flock IE Mozilla Firefox Mozilla Songbird Apple Safari Google Chrome and after extensive use of all of the above browsers I have a clear idea of the good sides and bad sides of some. Lynx: Lynx is a TEXT ONLY browser, which means that the does not display Images, Java, Flash, ect. I used it for testing my websites on, if Lynx could render the webpage then any web browser can. Opera: Opera I found was slow, and not as good as rendering webpages as other browsers I have used. On the plus side it is small and could be installed on a USB drive. Flock: Flock is a most difficult browser to use, it being a hybrid of web browsers. Unfortunately as I could not get my head round to use this browser, it was quickly uninstalled. IE: Microsoft's Internet Explorer I do not recommend ANYONE to use, no matter what. It is slow, full of bugs and security holes. After using IE for a half a year when I had XP, I switched to Mozilla Firefox after I noticed the bugs. Mozilla Firefox: The highly rated and award winning Mozilla Firefox is the safest browser available. It is also fast and a portable version is available to put on a pen drive. The reason why it is so safe is because it is open source, which means that anyone can view and edit the code if the spot a bug, or a security hole etc. Out of the lot, this is my second favourite browser. Mozilla Songbird: Mozilla Songbird is a web browser integrated into a music manager. It uses the same engine as Firefox, so again it is perfectly safe. Apple Safari: Now, you may think that this is slightly odd, but Apple (Yes, the same guys that make the iMac, iPod, iPhone and iPad (Alternate name for Apple haters: iTampon  )) have released a version of the native browser for iMac. Now, as you would expect from Apple, the interface is slick, clean and uncluttered, the browser loads fast and renders fast. It is also very secure, as the programmers who made it knew their operating system inside out and knew how to fill the gaps. This is my third favourite browser.Google Chrome: As you said, you were not impressed by the 'slow' installation time of Chrome, but remember that Google probably tested it on their computers, which would be extremely fast. Even on my laptop which has a 1.7GHz Processor and 1GB of RAM (Coupled with 8GB of ReadyBoost) could not install Chrome in under 2 minutes, but still, 2 minutes is pretty fast compared to 5 minutes for Flock. From clicking the Chrome icon in my tray to the browser loading with Google open on my laptop takes around 5-10 seconds... lightningly fast! Chrome is my favorite browser, and the one I used to write this message with. Happy browsing

Just an update on this, I'm still actively using Google Chrome and I'm loving it. Only major problem now is that there are some many cool extensions out there and each one is more and more of a drain on system resources/memory. Still, it's a great browser and I'd certainly recommend it. In-fact, talking about extensions, those of you who also use Google Chrome may be interested in this extension, which should be especially useful if you have a dynamic IP Address:- Show IP Any views and / or opinions expressed by myself are from me personally and do not represent those of any company I either work for or am a consultant for. I've been recently looking at a browser by Lunascape (http://www.lunascape.tv/). According to the information given by the Lunascape web-site, this browser simultaneously runs three separate browser technologies - Trident (Internet Explorer), Gecko (Firefox) and Webkit (Chrome & Safari) with the ability to run Firefox and IE add-ons. I'm not sure whether it runs add-ons for Chrome as I haven't explored that far yet. The set up is easy and it imported all of my FF bookmarks and add-ons during the process. Once it is running you can switch from "browser" to "browser" with a single click. I haven't found any problems yet but I haven't been playing with it for long. Usual disclaimers (I have no connection with Lunascape, you load and use at your own risk etc. etc.). Here's another one: Mozilla SeaMonkey It's a browser, an email client. and an IRC chat client all in one. It's as fast as Chrome, but doesn't come with all the extensions. (Formerly known as manadude2) Log in to reply |
