New system files problem 31/08/2013 at 10:43 #49036

Hi,

Just installed the new sys files, but I'm just getting characters shown on screen, which the faq tells me is because a font has not installed. I have re-installed and restarted after installation (several times!) but no luck.
I am running SimSig in a custom directory - i.e. not the default place suggested by the setup programme.
The old sys files worked Ok. What am I doing wrong?

Try sticking with the default locations and then it may work hunky dory.

Ok, re-installed in suggested location and restarted, but no change.
Lancing and N Wales just characters on screen, however all older sims (e.g. N London, Cambridge, Drain) work OK.

When you say 're-started' is that the SimSig Loader or a system re-boot?

Open notepad, go to the font change menu, is Simsigw2 an option you can select?

Could it be a problem with the permissions when you ran the set up for the new system files? I believe that some systems require administrator access to install fonts. On XP and W7 there is a \Windows\Fonts folder (don't have W8 so can't speak for that). On my XP machine, it is showing SimSig.fon and SimSigv2.fon. My W7 machine shows SIMSIG Regular, SIMSIGRT Regular, SimSigSmall Regular, SimSigSmallv2 Regular and SIMSIGv2 Regular, but if you look at the properties in all of the W7 fonts, they all refer back to SimSig.fon and SimSigv2.fon.

If you can find our way to the \Windows\Fonts directory, you may find that the fonts related to SimSigv2.fon have not been installed. I would guess you would need to run the set up program for the system files with administrator rights to put the v2 font into the folder - although I am not well versed in those matters and could be talking rubbish.

Which simulation(s) are you seeing this in? I know that I'm currently getting text instead of 'track' showing up on 'diagonal' bits of track on at-least Brighton and London Liverpool Street, but not on Marylebone.

Not happening to me on Brighton and LivSt. Maybe you're doing something wrong?

My files are in a custom directory with no problems.
Have you font substitution?

Not as far as I am aware.
I thought font substitution is called by an application, rather than the operating system; that is,if SimSig does not call for font substitution, none will take place.

Can you open Notepad and select the SimSig v2 font (the v appears as a symbol on mine)?

Phil, I think you have a security problem. Perhaps we can help. What is the makeup of your PC?

Hi Barry,

PC is running Win7 64, with full Admin rights.
I originally installed Simsig in a second HDD (my D drive) in a custom directory. This worked OK.

When I updated the system files, I installed to this same directory. The result was that the font problem occurred. Interestingly, sims like North London and Drain still work OK, but Llangollen, which was previously fine, now has the font problem.

All SimSig fonts have installed correctly in the c:\windows\fonts location and can be used from other applications.

I have tried complete uninstall and reinstalled to the default locations without success. I have uninstalled all and reinstalled an earlier version of system files - but Llangollen still won't work correctly, although it did originally!

At the moment, I have returned all to 'd:\rail sims\SimSig' - where the dll and exe files reside, the timetables being in the sub dir 'llangollen'

If you need further info, please let me know

Thanks, Phil

Hi Phil,

The following occurs when you load the new System file.

1. It places files "SimsigLicense.exe" and "SimSigloader.exe" into the Simsig folder.

2. It creates 2 subfolders in the Simsig folder namely "Simulations" and "Timetables".

3. It adds various files to the Windows folder.

The following occurs when you load a new sim. Example "Marylebone"

1. It creates a subfolder in both the Simulations and Timetables folder named "Marylebone".

2. It copies a file called "Marylebone.sim" into the Simulations folder.

3. It copies some jpg files to the Simulations/Marylebone folder. Snapshots and Saved files are kept here as well.

4. It copies Marylebone Timetable files into the Timetables/Marylebone folder.

There are now no sim "exe" files.

Hope this helps.

Clearly it's those other sims in that "rail sims" directory causing the problem!

Sorry, you really do have a strange issue there and I've nothing useful to contribute but I am watching the thread. Hopefully you'll get it sorted.

This is probably a stupid idea, but what about creating a folder d:\windows\fonts and copying the SimSig fonts into it, if the Sims are installed on the D drive?

Thanks for the idea. Tried it and font files can be copied to D drive, but windows will only let me install them to the default directory on the C drive.

Barry:
I have Lancing that works as you describe, but still has the same problem.
The(presumably earlier)Llangollen and North Wales Coast have exe files.

Phil:
Any sim released or upgraded after 1 August 2013 use the SimSigLoader (no exe file).

How about doing a test? Load the new System file into your C: drive. Load Lancing in the C:drive. No need to delete any files at the moment. Run the Simsig Loader that is created in C: drive and see what happens.

Clean install of Sys files, Lancing using defaults, followed by reboot.
Still the same I'm afraid...

Very odd - it is the fonts not loading, right?

How does what you're seeing compare to what I'm currently seeing on the Brighton simulation? See https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/19348870/Brighton_fun-fun.jpg

P.S.: Actually makes it very interesting and that bit more challenging trying to signal trains....
