Has the Highland Main Line ever been thought about?

Most of the network is operated by a radio token system with little conventional signals.

The Highland mainline is NOT part of the RETB network.

That's the Far North line that you're thinking about. RETB from Inverness first exchange point Clunes or Long section token to Muir of Ord.

I work up and down the HML most days.

We now have at least one sim where drivers ring to request and replace tokens and pass Stop boards (Cardiff Valleys) and another where you the signalman rings to request train orders from another signalman/dispatcher (Moss Vale), so from that standpoint I see no reason why RETB areas such as the Cambrian, Far North of Scotland (Inverness to Wick/Thurso and Kyle of Lochalsh) and the West Highland (Helensburgh to Oban/Fort William and Mallaig) could not be simulated in a similar way. Granted traffic is sparse but timetables could include Network Rail infrastructure monitoring trains if created in the modern era and maybe the odd freight (is there much on any of the routes I've mentioned these days?), and then add in level crossing use and associated telephone calls, issuing short and long tokens (making you think about how far to send a train before it crosses another), protection for track workers and also shunt tokens (I have been protected in this way while working on the outside of a train in the sidings adjacent to the platform line at Wick), and you can see you might not have as much time to sit and read the paper as you first thought.

I think there is enough data to do pre-RETB for most of the Scottish rural lines, allowing some very old timetables.
How about Inverness station area itself though ?
Is it permitted / data available ?

Given the (current) low frequency of services (e.g. Dunkeld has circa 15 trains in each direction per 24 hours) I think the natural gap in simulation terms is a 'Scotland North' covering Inverness to Aberdeen (Dyce fringe with NES) and Perth (Stanley Junction fringe with NES).

Work is underway at Pitlochry to increase loop size and allow simultaneous arrivals and Aviemore control area is moving to Inverness (not sure if simultaneous arrival changes apply to the loops it controls) so it might make sense to wait for these works to be completed and provide 2 eras.

In terms of Far North Scotland (and other RETB lines) the concept of Loop Clear Marker Boards, Long Section Tokens and Shunt tokens is missing from the current modifications to Sim Sig, as well as the ability to return token for section in rear and receive token for section in advance in the same transaction.

And the West Highland Line might make sense as an appendix to a sim covering Yoker IECC.

Two million people attempt to use Birmingham's magnificent rail network every year, with just over a million of them managing to get further than Smethwick.

Yes, as a NSCOT sim, but it exists only as for as the chining at Dyce and Dunkeld. AtoI line is undergoing a massive rebuild I believe at the moment. Anyway, have little or no Data and it's a long way down the list of things I may try one day.
