Hello!

I've just purchased my first sim (Salisbury, as it's my local) and after sorting everything out on the licence manager it still keeps the sim in demo mode. This may have been asked before however if not, can anyone suggest a way of fixing this?

thanks

Can you explain what you mean by "sorting everything out in Licence Manager" please?

If you open the Licence Manager again, does your licence for Salisbury show allocated to "this machine" or "nothing"?

I've just tried re-allocating the licence again and I get a pop-up saying "Error updating local licences" could this be the issue?

If you delete the "Common.cfg" file in the SimSig user directory and open the licence manager again, it should recreate the file fresh. Sometimes this clears out the problem.

Can't seem to find it! I've tried searching for it but to no avail.

On Windows 10 you find it in C:\Users\Public\Documents\SimSig. If you are using another operating system, post back and someone will identify the location for you.

Thanks for that, unfortunately Common.cfg doesn't exist in that location for me! I'm on windows 10 so don't know what is going on there. I loaded SimSig and went to install the new updates and when it had finished it said there were 70+ errors and that it couldn't create lots of the directories for TT's etc. (I think) can anyone shed some light on this?

Either you don't have admin rights, or a virus checker is being over protective, at a guess. Not sure which but hopefully someone can identify the issue.

I would say it is most likely a virus checker causing the problems, as normally* you do not need admin rights to write to the public documents folder.

*the default for the public folder is that everyone can read/write to it, without restriction.

If it were to be a virus checker causing the problem, would other files be missing from this location?

Not necessarily, as an update to a virus scanner could leave all that were there previously but not download new files, but the OP has stated in a post at 1451 that he was getting 70+ errors. and directories were not being created. I do belive other users have had a simular issues and to resolve they had to disable the virus scanner, or an exception needs to be added for the SimSig updater in the firewall rules.

Just to confirm, when you installed the SimSig system files, did you install them to the default location, or did you change it to a custom location?

I have everything SimSig which I can control in a bespoke location but C:\Users\Public\Documents\ still contains an automatically created SimSig folder and a common.cfg file which seems to be one of the key issues for this problem.

Isn't there this new Windows 10 anti-cryptolocker protection feature (Controlled Folder Access) that restricts access to the documents folders, too, unless you specifically whitelist a program?

I would very much doubt that such a feature would apply to the public folder as by its very nature it is to allow access to documents that you don't mind being shared.

Thinking about it the chances are a exception needs adding for SimSigRefresherC.exe in to the firewall rules, which under Windows 10 I do not know how to do

I haven't yet updated any of my computers to a version that includes that feature, so can't speak from experience, but this article says that the "Public" folders are part of the default set of protected folders, too.
