Online 		Hi,

Due to points failure at Guide Bridge, I have amended timetable for 6E33 to loop Denton Jn - Ashton Moss - Baguley Fold - Philips Park South - Ashburys - Guide Bridge instead of the more direct route. Driver has supoosedly acknowledged GSM message.

However, on arrival at DJ3 it still calls wrong route causing me to abandon the amended timetable - grr!

I wonder how likely it is that my driver would have knowledge of the Philips Park South curve or if I should have waited to find a pilot?

You'd be surprised what drivers know when they're on a finishing turn. Or just fancy a change of scene (and perhaps some brownie points with the local yard manager).

Sample dialogue:
Yard supervisor (on the phone to the Area Freight Assistant): "Any idea when we'll get rid of those tanks for Cambridge Street?" Reply unintelligible, then: "They won't all fit on 23 road, they're going to end up blocking the yard!" An expletive or two on hanging up.
Target 3 Driver
  • : "We'll take them."
    Supervisor (knowing Stonebridge men didn't sign the Midland): "Do you know the road?
    Driver: "Yeah, we always used to go over there. It's all colour light now ain't it? Yeah, we'll be all right."

    * Target 3 was the Willesden area 'trip & shunt' loco.

    I thought there was one in the Sea of Tranquility when Armstrong landed waiting for a back working

    There is a tale quoted by David L. Smith in "Legends of the Glasgow and South Western Railway" (David & Charles, 1980) about a time in the early LMSR days when some of the G&SW turns were booked to run between Carlisle and Glasgow via the ex-Caledonian main line over Beattock rather than the G&SWR line via Kilmarnock.     I'm sure I was told once of a time when a Saltley driver ended up at Plymouth, mind you that was over a decade ago I was first told that and I can't remember the finer details.
