I'm playing the October 2009 tt and have an ECS which entered the sim at Hitchen and which terminates in platform 1 where it forms a service which goes back towards Hitchen.

I would have thought that there would have been overnight storage facilities at Peterborough in those days. Was this not the case? My interpretation of Google Maps tells me that there are now. Is that correct?

2009 would only have EMU stabling which was in Nene Carriage Sidings - no DMUs stored at PBO

nene carriage sidings is the main storage facility at Peterborough.

Its likely the service does this for a reason, for instance it may have worked a prior service from KGX to Hitchin before going out of service. You could have a look at KGXs 2009 timetable to see where it comes from.

If it was 2009, all FCC unit stabling would be Peterborough, Kings Lynn, Cambridge, Letchworth, Hertford North, Welwyn and Hornsey. However during engineering works units do occasionally stable overnight at Hitchin up yard.

The down side at Hitchin is used for track machines mainly.

I think there used to be a staff train in the mornings, taking drivers from Hitchin (crew depot) to Letchworth (sidings). A variation of that runs to this day.

What operator are we talking about here as I have had a look at the 2009 TT and there are only 2 ECS's that enter at Hitchen and form a working that returns and neither use P1 in sim, one ECS is FCC 3P56 from KGX to Peterborough P3 or there is NXEC 5A01 from BN to Peterborough Via KGX which arrives into P2 (which incidently is what is now P1 after the platform renumbering around 2013).

2R01 if I remember correctly was the staff train that was Kings Cross to Letchworth booked via Welwyn GC except when engineering works meant that route was unavailable and it went via Hertford North.

Equally, 2P99 was a unofficial staff train from Peterborough booked via Hertford North, I say unofficial because despite being a passenger train and advertised as such, 90% of passengers were rail staff.

The service identity was '5B40/5B400410 04+10 EWD ECS Hitchen - Peterborough (DMU CA 2/CL 105)'
which was scheduled to arrive at Peterborough at 04.55 (see screenshot)

Thats not the 2009 timetable its the 1985 timetable. DMUs stabled at hitchin then as that was where the facilities were to service them at that time. Nene carriage sidings was mainly spare parcels stock and coaching stock.

Oh, is it. My mistake. For some reason I've logged it in my book as 2009; I'll have to change it.

Fingers working quicker than brain Dick. I do it all the time. In my case it's due to age.

The DMUs worki berween Peterborough & Hitchin as well as those operating between Peterborough & East Anglia or VV were maintained at either Cambridge TMD or Norwich TMD in the 1980s. Cambridge TMD also maintained the units working out of Hitchin. DMUs at Peterbrough were stabled in Nene Carriage Sdgs where today you'll see some EMUs stabled or stored in there & not much else. Also to note that the fuel nozzles are different between locos & DMUs. DMUs filled up using a gun like you fill up your car with petrol or diesel, whereas locos use a screw on nozzle. Hence the reason why most TMDs that maintained locos & units had 2 separate fuel points. One where locos fuelled & one where unitsfuelled. Whether they fuelled units at Peterborough or not at Peterborough SD by Spital Bridge I don't know. Best person to ask would be Vince as he was a DMU controller back in the late 1970s/eaRLY 1980S ABOUT dmu WORKINGS AT pETERBOROUGH.

The depot by Spiral Bridge has always been used for loco refueling from BR days to EWS to DB Cargo being a two road depot.

Even growing up in Peterborough I never saw DMUs there, just locos but interested to see if I'm wring though.

The only thing for units but guess it was for any traction was a coolant bowser on platform 5 by the stairs.
